Larry Dixon’s amazing propensity to win on Fathers Day continues as he wins his 5th consecutive Fathers Day event in Top Fuel. Dixon’s crew chief Dick LaHaie choreographs a truly impressive outing as he tunes his driver to both low ET and top speed of the meet during qualifying a 4.482 secs at 332.26 mph (which are both career bests for Dixon). Larry Jr. will not be denied in the final round as his 4.533 secs at 329.91 mph in the Miller Lite dragster turns back opponent David Grubnic who was making his 9th career NHRA final round appearance.
Top Fuel racing at E-Town includes some major upsets and very inspiring stories. Tire smoke takes out the Tony Schumacher U.S. Army car in an upset filled round one which also saw the demise of pre-race favorites Scott Kalitta and Brandon Bernstein. California’s Jack Beckman, who qualified his Menards-sponsored dragster 14th, upsets Scott Kalitta and Clay Millican to advance to the final four. Doug Kalitta is able to pad his overall POWERade points margin with a semi-final round finish driving for Connie Kalitta and Mac Tools.
FC class racing sees Del Worsham end his winless streak as he takes the Checker Schuck’s Kragen Chevy Monte Carlo to victory. Del rides out a 4.866 secs at 321.19 mph in the final round to beat the Brut-sponsored Dodge Stratus driven by Ron Capps.
FC qualifying was paced by a couple more Chevy Monte Carlos with Cruz Pedregon edging out Canadian Jeff Arend for the pole 4.791 secs to 4.792 secs. Both Chevy pilots are however ousted in round one when the tricky track surface takes it toll.
Tommy Johnson Jr. has a very strong event while enroute to a “final four” finish in FC driving Don Prudhomme’s Skoal-sponsored Chevy. “TJ” beats Tim Wilkerson and Gary Scelzi before spinning the tires while Ron Capps.
Ohio’s Troy Coughlin wins in AMS/TLR Pro Mod action – his first victory in that class. Coughlin is consistently fast driving the supercharged Jegs-sponsored Ford Mustang and prevails easily over Zack Barklage in the championship final round. Coughlin had beaten 3 supercharged Willys during earlier rounds, Troy Critchley, Joey Martin and Thomas Patterson.
Canadian Al Billes earns the event’s overall “wow factor” when he unloads a jaw-dropping run to take the pole in Pro Mod. Billes rides his Summit Racing sponsored Chevy Corvette to the quickest and fastest runs ever seen in Pro Mod racing at 6.030 secs and 236.92 mph – both NHRA records. In fact Billes now holds both ends of the Pro Mod class record in both NHRA and IHRA competition. The team however loses out in round two when the car shakes it’s tires while racing Zack Barklage.
Summit Racing team driver Jason Line wins for the 3rd time in 2005 in Pro Stock to move to within only 6 points of the overall POWERade points lead. Line outguns points leader Warren Johnson in an all Pontiac final round, winning a 6.692 secs to 6.714 secs decision.
Line had during round one went for the quickest pass of his career at 6.659 secs which was low ET of the meet. In fact he ran nothing but 6.6 secs elapsed times throughout the four elimination rounds. R/U Warren Johnson set top speed of the meet at 207.50 mph while losing out in the final round.
Pro Stock racing was a very spirited affair with a number of other drivers dipping into the 6.6 secs zone, including Larry Morgan, Richie Stevens Jr., and Kurt Johnson – all in round one.
Anton Brown beat Karen Stoffer in an all Suzuki Pro Stock Bike final round. Brown spotted Stoffer an early lead but was able to drive by for a 7.169 secs 184.55 mph to 7.238 secs 186.90 mph victory. Brown won the event after qualifying his U.S. Army-backed machine on the pole with a 7.085 secs.
Ryan Schnitz unloaded low ET of the meet with a stunning 7.019 secs (career best) in round one riding for Rob Muzzy. Schnitz however wasted an equally impressive 7.058 secs in round two on a -.009 red light while racing GT Tonglet. Tonglet, the overall points leader (after 6 PSM events this season) had set top speed at 193.24 mph.
PSM round one featured a scary moment when rider Scott Valetti came off his bike after a losing run of 7.251 secs at 182.55 mph. Incredibly Scott jumped to his feet uninjured after sliding to a safe stop.
TAFC class racing featured an emotional victory for winner Paul Gill who upset the field. Gill was racing with a heavy heart after losing his son (Paul Jr.) to Leukemia only two weeks before. Gill beat out Bobby Martin in an all Dodge Avenger final round after pre-race favorites Frank Manzo and Bob Newberry were eliminated. Gill’s highly satisfying final round effort of 5.580 secs was low ET of the entire event.
The TAD final was all injected-nitro with Randy Meyer facing off against Ashley Force. Ashley grabbed a slight starting line advantage however it was Meyer first to the stripe at 5.387 secs 256.02 mph to 5.421 secs 268.44 mph.
Ashley Force had entered TAD eliminations as the favorite after posting both low ET (5.262 secs) and top speed (270.16 mph) during qualifying time trials driving her Castol-sponsored machine.
