Funny Car driver Tony Pedregon came close to claiming the maximum available points per event when he won a spirited class eliminator driving the “Q Racing” Chevy Monte Carlo. After qualifying second with a career best and NHRA national record setting run of 4.659 secs, Pedregon turned back all challengers to win for the 33rd time in his racing career. Pedregon prevailed in the final round over Robert Hight as he used a lane choice advantage to perfection while taking victory at 4.803 secs and 326.32 mph.
Robert Hight’s R/UP placing driving the AAA Auto Club Ford Mustang included the quickest ET recorded in FC class history -- a sensational 4.636 secs -- which also came up during qualifying. But unlike Pedregon, Hight was not able to back up the mark within the required 1% to make it official.
Hight’s final round appearance does however give him the overall POWERade points lead after two events this season.
Pro Stock class racing saw another victory go to the Chevrolet brand when Kurt Johnson scored driving the ACDelco Chevy Cavalier. Johnson used 3 superior starts during Sunday’s final eliminations to take the title including a .016 RT in the final which allowed his 6.694 secs run at 206.67 mph to topple defending World Champion Jason Line, who recorded a quicker but later 6.676 secs at 207.85 mph.
Johnson’s win was his first since Memphis last year and assured that the 2007 racing season would be his 13th straight year of recording at least one victory on the tour.
KJ’s title came over another very fast Pro Stock program as all 16 qualified cars run sub 6.70 secs.
R/UP Jason Line paced the field driving his Summit Racing Pontiac GTO with a 6.635 secs but then lowered the track record to 6.634 secs while winning his opening round match. Line’s racing stable mate Greg Anderson also came away with a track record – upping the MPH mark to an astonishing 209.49 mph, far faster then the previous best at Firebird Raceway – 207.08 mph.
Pro Stock class racing included a spirited performance by the class’s sole female driver, Erica Enders, who had best finish since switching to Mopar last season. Erica qualified #3 with a 6.648 secs and then took her now Race Girl-sponsored Dodge Stratus to the “final four” before losing on a holeshot to Kurt Johnson.
“Hot Rod” Fuller was the event’s only repeat winner as he scored for the second year in a row in Top Fuel driving the David Powers/Valvoline-sponsored dragster.
Fuller, who is from Las Vegas, was probably the most consistent car in the class at Phoenix. After qualifying 2nd with a 4.471 secs effort, Fuller ran three more 4.4s on Sunday to take the title, stopping Melanie Troxel’s machine in the final round, 4.490 secs 327.19 mph to 4.536 secs 325.61 mph. Fuller’s victory also included top speed of the meet at 331.61 mph.
U.S. Army dragster driver Tony Schumacher once again set the pace as he screamed to a track record 4.430 secs to earn the pole, however Schumacher was bounced from the program in the semi final round losing to his former teammate Troxel.
Top Fuel racing was the fourth quickest field on record, featuring a swift bump spot of 4.594 secs.
The event did include a big scare in the pit area on Saturday when Mopar Pro Stock engine builder/crew chief Roy Johnson was rushed to the hospital after suffering a heart attack. Johnson later underwent bypass surgery. Everyone at DragRaceCanada wishes “Uncle Roy” a speedy comeback.
