Legendary drag racing team owner Don “Snake” Prudhomme stole the New York area spotlight at NHRA E-Town as both his team drivers, Larry Dixon (Top Fuel) and Tommy Johnson Jr (Funny Car) come away victorious.
Tommy Johnson’s FC win was a remarkable and gutsy one. After dominating qualifying, including earning the pole and low ET of the meet (4.729 secs) -- TJ had a major fire while winning his round one match over Gary Densham on Sunday. Johnson got the Skoal-sponsored Chevy Impala stopped safely however fire damage was rather severe and his team scrambled hard to make repairs and install a new body for round two. Johnson came back swinging hard as he then advanced to the final round to face off against the Q Racing Chevy Impala driven by Tony Pedregon. “TJ” earned a most deserving and popular victory as his 4.994 secs to 5.022 secs final round decision gave him his first circuit title since last August.
FC eliminator included a number of solid performances including semifinal round finishes for two more Chevrolet drivers, Jeff Arend and Tony Bartone. The pride of Canada, Arend, qualified #13 before he won over Scott Kalitta and Tim Wilkerson. Jeff lost an extremely close round three decision to Tommy Johnson; 4.960 secs to TJ’s 4.961 secs.
Dixon’s win in Top Fuel was a more smoother sailing affair. After beating Whit Bazemore in round one his SkyTel-sponsored dragster team ran progressively quicker in the final three frame on Sunday while beating Doug Kalitta, Hillary Will and ultimately the Snap-On Tools dragster driven by Doug Herbert.
The win was Dixon’s second of the ’07 season and moved him past Brandon Bernstein into 2nd place in NHRA POWERade Top Fuel points. It was also his 4th career win at the New Jersey event.
Doug Herbert’s runner-up performance was his second final round appearance of the 2007 season. After qualifying 9th he beat Melanie Troxel, David Grubnic and JR Todd.
U.S. Army team driver Tony Schumacher reset the Old Bridge Township Raceway Park track record to a 4.455 secs during qualifying but once again was upset in round one – losing out to David Grubnic.
Angelle Sampey made headlines during Pro Stock Motorcycle qualifying when she reset the NHRA national ET record at 6.871 secs – the quickest run in class history.
Angelle could not however turn that domination into a victory as she went .006 red during round two riding the U.S. Army Suzuki to lose out to Craig Treble. Treble promptly took full advantage of that development as he then rode the Team Lartigue Suzuki to an overall event victory – the 10th of his career.
Treble combined a quicker starting line reaction time with a run of 6.990 secs at 191.70 mph to edge out defending POWERade World Champion Andrew Hines in the final round. Hines ran 7.003 secs at 190.43 mph. Treble had earlier set top speed of the meet for the PSM category at 194.77 mph.
Pro Stock car racing featured yet another back breaking victory by Summit Racing GTO driver Greg Anderson. Anderson won for the 6th time this season when he beat a red-lighting Jeg Coughlin in the final round.
Anderson’s victory came from the pole (6.592 secs – track record) and he also set top speed of the meet at 210.57 mph – also a track record.
NHRA’s AMS Pro Mod circuit returned to action at Englishtown and that eliminator featured a first time winner, Tim Tindle.
Tindle drove his supercharged ’67 Ford Mustang past a red-lighting Jay Payne in the championship final round. He had beaten Joe Mulligan, Tony Pontieri and points leader Josh Hernandez in earlier competition.
Colorado’s Jim Whiteley won a hard fought Top Alcohol Dragster eliminator – his second national event title this season. Whiteley overcame a quicker start by opponent “Diamond Dave” DeAngelis in the all supercharged car final round and he took a 5.358 secs at 267.06 mph win when DeAngelis’s car developed problems at half track. The win came in Whiteley’s first ever visit to the Englishtown racing facility.
DeAngelis’s final round placing was his best finish yet in NHRA national event level competition. Dave was attending his first event after forming a new association with DragRaceCanada’s own NitroMoose brand. Dave qualified 4th (5.429 secs) and beat out Darryl Hitchman, Mike Kosky and John Finke.
The top performing TAD cars at Englishtown were the nitro injected cars driven by John Finke and Aaron Olivarrez who set low ET (5.275 secs) and top speed (274.44 mph) respectively. Both those cars were however eliminated in the semi final round.
The TAFC title featured a first time winner with 3rd generation driver Bob Tasca earning his first national event level win. Tasca drove his Ford Mustang to a final round upset win over Bob Newberry’s Valvoline-sponsored Chevy, winning a 5.561 secs 262.54 mph to 5.811 secs 253.56 mph match-up.
Pre-event favorite Frank Manzo qualified #1 and then set low ET and top speed at 5.501 secs and 264.70 mph – but he was knocked off by Tasca in round two on a holeshot – 5.585 secs to 5.573 secs.
