Doug Kalitta remains undefeated at Sears Point Raceway when he
wins his second career title. His first career TF win came at
this track in 1998. Kalitta blows by Tony Schumacher in money
dash which keeps Schumacher’s final round winless streak in tact
-- he is now 0 for 6 in NHRA TF finals. (You know that can’t last
much longer!) Schumacher nails down top speed of the meet for
7th time in 1999 -- goes 320.74 mph (track record).
Wild incident in round one of FC sees California’s Chuck Beal
beat John Force in huge upset but then blow the body off his car
and then veer into Force’s lane. Force takes evasive action but
still collides with Beal from behind. Both cars spin out -- Force’s
Castrol Mustang suffers minor damage however Beal’s machine is
tore up good.
Crash and
burn fans are also treated to antics by Jim Head and Jim Epler.
Head comes down hard from a wheelstand breaking off a front tire
and then rides along the retaining wall in his TF car. He makes
repairs and returns. Epler, who "lit it up real good" at Seattle
one week before -- has huge blower explosion during a qualifying
lap on Saturday. Mega expensive C-5 Corvette body is reduced to
fiber slivers. That’s two Corvettes in two weeks == $$$.
Federal
Mogul Dragster racing features first time victory for Nevada’s
Duane Shields. Shields wins in a walk when scheduled final round
opponent Darren Nicholson breaks during burnout. The nitro injected
cars dominate performance wise. Rick Henkelman sets low ET at
5.641 secs while JCIT Pontiac Funny Car owner John Costanza take
his dragster to top speed with a career best 261.27 mph.
Whit
Bazemore get in John Force’s face while making his third consecutive
final round appearance driving his new generation Kendall ‘99
Camaro. After placing runner-up at both Denver and Seattle --
Bazemore wins in dominating style with the sleek new car owned
by Chuck Etchells. Bazemore wins event from the wire after qualifying
low at 4.931 secs. He also sets top speed and low ET of the event
(4.876 secs and 310.20 mph). His crew chief Tim Richards is named
crew chief of the race. Impressive performance causes some over
the shoulder looks from the dominating to this point John Force
Castrol camp....
Warren
Johnson and his son Kurt enter Saturday as non qualified cars
in Pro Stock. But Kurt runs 6.898 secs in first Saturday session
to nail down the pole. Warren does not get in until dramatic last
ditch evening effort -- running 6.925 secs at the bell which is
good for second. If Warren had not qualified it would have been
first time in 271 consecutive races. Warren runs 200.77 which
is first 200 mph Pro Stock run at the facility. But points leader
loses in second round while Kurt is taken out in final by suddenly
red hot Jim Yates in Splitfire/Peak Pontiac. Yates runs super
consistent during eliminations.
