Matt Hines sizzles once again while winning in Pro Stock Bike. Takes Vance & Hines Eagle One Suzuki to quickest run in class history (NHRA or AMA/Prostar) with stunning 7.188 secs lap during Saturday’s final qualifying session. Mark is new NHRA national ET record. Hines grabs overall Winston Championship points lead with win. Angelle Seeling, who had been the points leader all season fouls out in round two to Tony Mullen.
Joe Amato earns milestone 50th career win in Top Fuel -- the most
by any driver in the class. He also wins at Maple Grove Raceway
for the first time. Victory propels Amato into second place in
mega close NHRA Winston Championship chase. Tony Schumacher is
bridesmaid once again -- he is now 0 for 8 in career NHRA TF finals
but maintains overall points lead. Gary Scelzi moves into third
place in Winston points with semi final round finish. Scelzi blasts
track record to a 4.529 secs.
Tommy Johnson
Jr. earns his first career win in only his 8th start in Funny
Car class. Transplanted Top Fuel driver wheels Joe Gibbs Interstate/Hot
Rod Magazine Firebird past resurgent Ron Capps in the final round.
Johnson Jr. becomes only twelfth driver in NHRA history to score
wins in both TF and FC. He had two previous wins in TF class.
Fuel
floppers have tough time taming the Maple Grove Raceway track
surface. John Force and Tony Pedregon are only teams to run in
the "fours" and that comes during qualifying. Force loses in round
one of competition for second event in a row. Tony Pedregon, who
qualified on the pole, falls in round two.
While
the FC contingent had tire spinning problems the Pro Stock cars
certainly did not. Numerous racers run career best times and bump
spot is a super tough 6.955 secs. Warren Johnson paces field bombing
both ends of track record to 6.853 secs and 201.43 mph. WJ however
loses in semis to Mark Pawuk holeshot. Pawuk races Jeg Coughlin
in interesting final round match between drag racing’s two top
mail order houses -- Jegs Mail Order and Summit Racing Equipment.
Coughlin wins it and creeps closer to 2nd place points man Kurt
Johnson.
Pro Stock
highlights include Darrell Alderman and Team Mopar car owner David
Nickens who have best showing yet this season with a strong semi
final round finish. Bruce Allen becomes newest and 12th member
of prestigious Speed-Pro 200 mph club -- runs career best 6.905
secs at 200.17 mph in qualifying.
Dean Skuza
debuts flashy new paint scheme on his Matco Tools "Special Forces"
Dodge Avenger. Great looking car qualifies 7th with a 5.123 secs
but loses to fellow Dodge Avenger driver Cory Lee in round two.
Jim Epler, who finished runner-up at Indy has another strong showing
driving WWF Undertaker Firebird -- going to the semis.
Paul Gill
breaks though scoring his first career national event win in Federal
Mogul Funny Car class. Gill beats star studded field which includes
Manzo, Newberry and recent U.S. Nationals winner Tony Bartone.
Gill’s Dodge Avenger wins final when Bartone’s Camaro shakes it’s
tires. Gill sets top speed at 251.11 mph enroute to win.
Art Gallant
runs the second quickest time in FMD history with an astounding
5.380 secs driving his nitro-injected car during round one of
competition. Gallant had qualified on the pole with a 5.464 secs.
Final round however sees Mike Kosky win in a walk when opponent
Doug Foley breaks his car on the burnout.
