  NHRA 3RD MATCO TOOLS SUPERNATIONALS

Larry Dixon uses new crew chief Dick LaHaie for the first time. Move by team owner Don Prudhomme pays immediate dividends as Dixon takes Miller Lite car to victory lane -- his second win of the season.

Gary Scelzi stays alive in Winston Top Fuel points -- but just barely. Scelzi takes Team Winston car to a runner-up finish and resets NHRA ET record to 4.480 secs (quickest run in history) along the way. Scelzi is now in second place with one event remaining. Tony Schumacher can clinch Winston Top Fuel Championship by just qualifying at Pomona Finals. Schumacher sets top speed of the meet at 325.30 mph -- it is the 12th time this season he has done that.

John Force kills ‘em again in FC -- winning his second event in one week. Force bombs field with consistent fast runs including 4.811 secs and 321.12 mph track records, low ET, top speed, etc, etc, etc. Win is John’s 81st career title. He now has Glidden’s all time 85 wins well within his sights....

Matt Hines sets both ends of the Pro Stock Bike record with the quickest and fastest marks ever -- 7.154 secs and 191.48 mph -- to creep up on points leader Angelle Seeling who’s lead was cut to 14 points. Both Hines and Seeling lose in semi finals. Winston PSB title will be settled at Finals in Pomona. Tony Mullen, riding for team owner Troy Vincent’s "Team 23" Suzuki wins for the first time in the class.

Eddie Hill has deja vu after frightenly similar massive engine explosion to what happened in Dallas one week earlier. During Saturday qualifying Hill’s engine fireballs, splits in two, and jumps out of the chassis at nearly 300 mph! Hill does expert job in bringing car to a stop but is injured this time. Concerned homestate crowd holds it’s collective breath as he is cut out of the car. A concussion and fracture of the lumbar vertebrae sends him to hospital -- he is released after overnight observation.

Dramatic FMFC final decides NHRA champion in that class. Tony Bartone misses the title when he loses a close match to Pat Austin. Bartone’s loss assures Frank Manzo of the championship -- his third straight FMFC World title.

IHRA standout racer Rickie Smith wins his second career NHRA Pro Stock title and his first since 1993. Smith upsets the field driving the Howard and Williams Pontiac Firebird. Warren Johnson resets the NHRA speed record for the second time in a week -- this time to 202.36 mph.

Pro Stock qualifying was paced by Homestate fan favorite Bruce Allen who runs best time of his career - 6.839 secs to lead the very quick field (6.925 secs bump). Allen loses on a holeshot in round one to number 16 qualifier Mike Thomas. Jeg Coughlin Jr. has career quick run at 6.837 secs -- which is low ET of the event.

Federal Mogul Dragster driver Bill Reichert crashes again driving Michigan-based Bars Leaks-sponsored car. Reichert who had a nasty spill during May in Atlanta loses control in opening pair of round one eliminations and lays car on it’s side and whacks both guardrails. Thankfully he is not injured.

Colorado’s V. Gaines becomes 15th member of the Speed Pro 200 mph club for Pro Stock racers after a 200.05 mph clocking during qualifying.
