takes Miller Lite car to victory lane -- his second win of the
season.
Gary Scelzi stays alive in Winston Top Fuel points -- but just
barely. Scelzi takes Team Winston car to a runner-up finish and
resets NHRA ET record to 4.480 secs (quickest run in history)
along the way. Scelzi is now in second place with one event remaining.
Tony Schumacher can clinch Winston Top Fuel Championship by just
qualifying at Pomona Finals. Schumacher sets top speed of the
meet at 325.30 mph -- it is the 12th time this season he has done
that.
John Force
kills ‘em again in FC -- winning his second event in one week.
Force bombs field with consistent fast runs including 4.811 secs
and 321.12 mph track records, low ET, top speed, etc, etc, etc.
Win is John’s 81st career title. He now has Glidden’s all time
85 wins well within his sights....
Matt
Hines sets both ends of the Pro Stock Bike record with the quickest
and fastest marks ever -- 7.154 secs and 191.48 mph -- to creep
up on points leader Angelle Seeling who’s lead was cut to 14 points.
Both Hines and Seeling lose in semi finals. Winston PSB title
will be settled at Finals in Pomona. Tony Mullen, riding for team
owner Troy Vincent’s "Team 23" Suzuki wins for the first time
in the class.
Eddie
Hill has deja vu after frightenly similar massive engine explosion
to what happened in Dallas one week earlier. During Saturday qualifying
Hill’s engine fireballs, splits in two, and jumps out of the chassis
at nearly 300 mph! Hill does expert job in bringing car to a stop
but is injured this time. Concerned homestate crowd holds it’s
collective breath as he is cut out of the car. A concussion and
fracture of the lumbar vertebrae sends him to hospital -- he is
released after overnight observation.
Dramatic
FMFC final decides NHRA champion in that class. Tony Bartone misses
the title when he loses a close match to Pat Austin. Bartone’s
loss assures Frank Manzo of the championship -- his third straight
FMFC World title.
IHRA
standout racer Rickie Smith wins his second career NHRA Pro Stock
title and his first since 1993. Smith upsets the field driving
the Howard and Williams Pontiac Firebird. Warren Johnson resets
the NHRA speed record for the second time in a week -- this time
to 202.36 mph.
Pro Stock
qualifying was paced by Homestate fan favorite Bruce Allen who
runs best time of his career - 6.839 secs to lead the very quick
field (6.925 secs bump). Allen loses on a holeshot in round one
to number 16 qualifier Mike Thomas. Jeg Coughlin Jr. has career
quick run at 6.837 secs -- which is low ET of the event.
Federal
Mogul Dragster driver Bill Reichert crashes again driving Michigan-based
Bars Leaks-sponsored car. Reichert who had a nasty spill during
May in Atlanta loses control in opening pair of round one eliminations
and lays car on it’s side and whacks both guardrails. Thankfully
he is not injured.
Colorado’s
V. Gaines becomes 15th member of the Speed Pro 200 mph club for
Pro Stock racers after a 200.05 mph clocking during qualifying.
