Pro Stock
Dodges are the top story of the event. First, the factory backed
team consisting of Darrell Alderman, Scott Geoffrion, Larry Nance
and Larry Morgan are NOT in competition after NHRA officials end
the moratorium on the engine configuration they have been using
for over a year (a Pontiac). But then only legit Mopar-powered
Avenger driven by Allen Johnson, and tuned by Team Mopar cast
off Dale Eicke, rises to the occasion. As Mopar factory powers
look on red-faced, Johnson team gets ultimate last laugh as they
dominate enroute to their first NHRA win. Johnson runs career
quick 6.873 secs and the first ever 200+ mphs by a Dodge in the
class. The win ends the GM factory dominance of NHRA Pro Stock
which dates back to Topeka 1997.
Pro Stock racing is NHRA’s quickest
field ever featuring a 6.911 secs bump spot. The Speed Pro 200
mph Club for Pro Stockers which previously had only four members
more then doubles in size. In addition to Allen Johnson (200.56
mph), Richie Stevens (200.08 mph), Mike Thomas (200.35 mph), Troy
Coughlin (200.47 mph) and Greg Anderson (200.11 mph) add their
names to the elite sixteen listing. In total event features no
less then 18 200 mph runs in Pro Stock -- a NHRA record.
National records fall in Pro Stock
as Warren Johnson and his son Kurt both rewrite the NHRA standards.
Warren runs the fastest speed in NHRA history at 202.24 mph which
betters the 201.37 official mark he set at Gainesville. Kurt takes
his AC Delco Camaro to the quickest mark ever in NHRA Pro Stock
competition -- a national record setting 6.840 secs.
Pro Stock Truck also sees a national
record broken as drag racing chassis builder extraordinare Jerry
Haas takes his Chevy S-10 to a new ET mark at 7.505 secs. But
it is ultimately NHRA speed record holder Brad Jeter that prevails
in the class.
FC qualifying features something
different as Jim Epler is surprise low qualifier driving one of
a kind Easy-Care/Ecklers C-5 Corvette. Epler runs 4.933 secs and
goes two rounds before being stopped by rampaging Castrol Team.
John Force and his understudy Tony Pedregon meet in the final
once again. Force’s Team Castrol remains undefeated winning their
6th event in six tries this season.
Gary Scelzi, who won at Dallas one
week prior runs second quickest time in NHRA history with a thundering
4.494 secs in Team Winston car to earn the pole. He also nails
down top speed at 321.12 mph during the same run. But Scelzi loses
to number 16 qualifier Doug Herbert in round one. Top Fuel eventually
goes to Cory McClenathan who wins first time for new sponsor MBNA.
Federal Mogul Alcohol racing features
first time NHRA winner as Art Gallant wins class driving an injected
nitro car. FMFC is a final round battle of Dodge Avengers as Frank
Manzo beats top division rival Bob Newberry.
Pennzoil Nationals is plagued by
logistic problems. Thursday’s schedule is a washout due to rain
and Sunday’s eliminations program isn’t completed until Monday
also due to rain. Despite best efforts by NHRA and track officials
-- event is unfortunately a one lane affair with the vast majority
of winlights coming from the right side.
