After three picture perfect days during qualifying the weather
goes into the toilet on raceday (Sunday). Heavy and persistent
rains postpone completion of eliminations until Tuesday May 25th.
John Force wins again -- remarkably it’s his sixth win in eight
races this season. Final is sensational as it is one of the quickest
side by side pairings in NHRA FC history -- Force edges out Cruz
Pedregon 4.878 secs to 4.873 secs. For Pedregon the ride is his
last in Joe Gibbs owned Interstate Batteries Pontiac as he and
crew chief Mike Green are let go following the event. Rumors run
rampant as to who will drive car at next event.
Federal
Mogul Funny Car racer Carol "Bunny" Burkett produces one of the
performance highlights as she records her first career "five"
at 5.955 secs during qualifying. Not big news to some -- but for
Burkett who has bravely battled back from critical injuries suffered
in a crash in 1997, the number is significant. Bunny wins round
one but is knocked out by Manzo in 2nd frame. Manzo however slips
off pace in final and Bartone wins for 2nd time this season.
Ohio’s
Jeg’s Mail Order boys have a sensational event. On Saturday, Jeg
Coughlin Jr., beats the best of the best in Pro Stock winning
$50,000 in the Holley Dominator Duel. Coughlin psyches out Warren
Johnson in final as his 6.925 secs at 200.26 easily handles Warren’s
.355 foul start. Coughlin’s brother Mike then wins in Pro Stock
Truck driving Chevy S-10 -- his first career NHRA victory.
Competition
eliminator qualifying is paced by Frank Aragona’s unique twin
intake 203 CID Subaru-powered E/ED. One-of-a-kind powered machine
vaults to 8.527 secs which is sixty under. But odds on favorite
for event’s "Best Engineered" award is overlooked in politcal
move as officials instead pick ‘99 Chrysler Sebring Super Stocker
of Mike Volkman. Why not -- event is Mopar sponsored.
Chuck
Etchells makes first driving appearance of the season -- but it
comes in the ‘99 Camaro bodied FC entry of James Sickles. Etchells
runs two great looking 5.0’s in qualifying -- but lights up the
tires in round one and loses to Al Hofmann.
Rick
Santos flexes muscles again in Federal Mogul Dragster class. One
week after going 5.39 secs at Atlanta, Santos qualifies low (5.453
secs) runs low ET (5.442 secs) and hits top speed 260.26 mph to
win going away.

FMD qualifying sees NHRA national event debut of "Diamond Dave"
DeAngelis, one of industries top photographers and a regular contributor
to Dragracecanada. Diamond’s debut is cut short however as mechanical
woes keep him from qualifying driving a car owned by Steve Zavor.
Pro Stock
racer John Nobile shows great sense of humor as he blatantly runs
Mopar Performance decals on the side of his Oldsmobile throughout
the event. Move is in response to recent controversy surrounding
Team Mopar engine program (now recognized as GM engines). Reading
between the lines -- display implied Nobile had been running a
Mopar engine and didn’t even know it!
E-Town
track records were shattered. Warren Johnson rewrote both ends
in Pro Stock to 6.875 secs and 201.58 mph. Gary Scelzi’s 4.550
is a new track Top Fuel ET mark and Pro Stock Bike winner Angelle
Seeling hits a track record 7.220 secs. Brad Jeter’s 7.571 secs
was a new low for Pro Stock Truck. Joe Amato upped the track mph
standard in Top Fuel to 324.05 mph.
