Often I ponder what makes a Person Successful, a Winner, or even what constitutes Greatness. We are all Winners in the Game of Life; after all, we’re here aren’t we? But sometimes I wonder "How do I get there from here?" How can I apply what I have observed first hand into a formula for achievement that I can then readily apply to my own Life?
Some of these questions came after attending the Canadian Motorcycle Drag Racing Associations Races over the years. I wondered what went on in the minds of the Racers as they flew down the Track. Is it to find out what is on the other side? Or what Prize do you Win for that? Maybe it’s simply that they want to go fast. What makes a Racer stand out from the rest and get to the Finish Line first, time and time again? What makes a Champion?
A common thread amongst them is Grace - a silent knowing - they set their sights on where they want to go and never look back. Setting Goals, they Strive to surpass Personal Bests. With a Positive Attitude, Commitment, Faith, Perseverance, a bit of Feel the Fear and Do it Anyway, Overcoming Limitations, Commitment, Attention to Detail. Unwavering in their Quest for Success, they are Relentless and Consistent and very Professional.
Many of the accomplished Racers make it a point to Mentor others; sharing their wisdom, knowledge and expertise. I have never seen such Sportsmanship in action before! They are real examples. Even if they are busy they still take time out to sign Autographs, lend a hand in the Pits, or to talk with the Fans. All this goes on in the midst of the Fine Tuning, Time-trials, Breakdowns, Repairs, and the Racing itself. It’s really exemplary!
I’ve heard the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. I try not to make the same mistakes twice. Being in the Pits I’ve seen a combination that was working and winning and at the last minute it was taken apart, re-arranged, put back together again and it did even better than expected! All the while I was thinking this is crazy! If it works and it’s not broke then don’t fix it, right? Now I know that sometimes it pays to take chances.
I have learned early on if you are not the Lead Dog then the scene never changes. As a Kid, I colored outside the lines - as an Adult, I am fortunate and live pretty much outside the box. Life has its ups and downs, sure, but as long as I can Ride my Harley I’ll be OK. It’s all good… In my ideal World there is contentment and continuity.
On my Path I’ve met Champions and Winners and I have tried to emulate them. Excelling, if only at the basics like being a good Person or a great Friend - is important to me today. I want to do more and to be more. As I walk the high wire of Life, operating without a safety net, I am not afraid to fall. Each day spent in the pursuit of excellence, in whatever capacity, is a day well lived.
