Welcome to the December 10th, 2002 edition of "On The Road with Kenny
Racing," the bi-weekly newsletter featuring the Landa Pressure Washers Super
Comp Dragsters of Alan and Jason Kenny.
Dad and I spent this past weekend at the annual PRI (performance racing
industry) show. I was really amazed at who was actually there. It was fun
in that, when you went to DART to ask a question, you could ask Dick Maskin.
Or, when you go to Jesel, you get to meet Tom Martino. And best of all,
when you purchase a couple of trailers from T&E, you can hang out in their
display trailer when you're tired.
The highlight of the trip was the Friday night meal with all of the alcohol
racers. We walked into an empty bar (one person sitting at the bar, all
tables empty) and setup one long row of tables. I sat between Alcohol Funny
Car driver Dennis Taylor and Earl Datweiler, former driver and current owner
of an injected nitro dragster (as well as our trailer builder) ... Across
the table was Dad, along with Alcohol Funny Car drivers Frank Manzo
(multi-time World Champ) and Mert Littlefield, who also has a somewhat large
history in our sport.
After about an hour, Comp racer Brian Browell showed up with his engine
builder Bill 'Grumpy' Jenkins. Just your average dinner table featuring
people from Canada, New Jersey, Indiana, Illinois and California. For the
three hours we were there, I may have actually spoken almost sixty seconds
worth. But it was so much fun just listening to all these racers.
Now I'll give a general overview of where our off-season projects currently
stand.
ROADSTERS - The black roadster is sitting at S&W Race Cars, awaiting
pick-up. The yellow roadster is currently in the process of being painted.
We're not sure when the yellow car will be complete ... but I hope to be
visiting S&W in the first couple days of January.
TRAILER - The trailer is complete. It will stay at T&E until the motorhome
is ready, as we're going to have T&E "beef up" the hitch. We'd also rather
do all the wiring there, so that if there is a problem, we'll have the
necessary help.
MOTORHOME - The Monaco Dynasty will travel from Oregon to New York
undergoing a "white glove" inspection on the road. It is scheduled to
arrive in Albany on Friday, December 20. Some of our options will be
installed in Albany, meaning the unit won't be ready until the new year.
MOTORS - The new "565's" are quite a way's from being in our shop. They
will undergo "final assembly" sometime in the very near future ... I hope.
We name all of our motors for maintenance record keeping. Austin and Owen
(my cousins) represent the 565's. One of our three 505 cubic inchers,
Rolly, has gone back to D&D Performance for freshening. It has seen 391
runs since D&D last took it apart. Dad freshened it last off-season, or
about 199 runs ago. Our spare, Ed, as well as my engine from last year,
Todd, will stay in our Kingston shop.
Ed & Rolly are the co-owners of D&D Performance. Todd is the machinist at
D&D. D&D also services your daily street car ... where Graeme does most of
the work. Graeme asked us why he didn't get a motor named after him ... so
we told him we named the golf cart engine after him.
TRANSMISSIONS - Our Select Performance transmissions were actually completed
and delivered well before they were scheduled. They delivered the trannies
and converters at Cecil County ... after telling us they should be completed
for the Keystones (3 weeks later). Special thanks to Ed Alessi Jr. and Sr.
for their service. They actually spent over an hour in our trailer giving
advice after learning more about our combination. With incredible service
like this, I kinda wish they built motorhomes too.
Below is our TENTATIVE 2003 Schedule. Keep in mind; with a couple of these,
we are assuming the 2003 schedules will be the same as 2002. For example,
Grand Bend Motorplex has not released their schedule yet.
February 28-March 2 --- IHRA National @ San Antonio, Texas.
Assuming everything is assembled and ready, we'll use this race to get the
bugs out of the cars and the drivers. If we didn't have relatives in Texas,
we probably wouldn't travel this far. Especially for a race that is the
"first annual."
March 6-9 --- NHRA Divisional @ Orlando, Florida.
March 13-16 --- NHRA National @ Gainesville, Florida.
April 10-13 --- NHRA Open @ Atco, New Jersey.

November 12-16 --- 5-Day Bracket Race @ Bradenton, Florida.
November 19-23 --- 5-Day Bracket Race @ West Palm, Florida.
If our off-season is quiet enough, we'll probably compete in the following
races as well.
November 28-30 --- NHRA Open @ West Palm, Florida.
December 5-7 --- Bracket Race @ Bradenton, Florida.
December 12-14 --- NHRA Open @ Orlando, Florida.
10 NHRA Nationals, 9 NHRA Divisionals, 5 NHRA Opens, 5 Bracket Races, 1 IHRA
National and 12 off-weekends (from March 22-23 to October 18-19). It
promises to be one heck of a year.
The next edition of 'On The Road with Kenny Racing' will be sent in three
weeks, December 31.
Happy Holidays from the Kenny Family
