Welcome to the January 1st 2003 edition of "On The Road with Kenny Racing,"
the bi-weekly newsletter featuring the Landa Pressure Washers Super Comp
Dragsters and now the brand new Super Gas Corvette Roadsters of Alan and
Jason Kenny.
Where do I begin? We'll start with the good news.
On the Thursday before Christmas, we went to S&W and picked up our brand new
2003 Corvette Roadsters. The cars looked awesome. I'm not sure the $13,000
paint is any better than our $1,000 worth-of-paint dragsters, but they do
look nice.
After several modifications to our 48-foot trailer, we were able to load
both cars and head home early Thursday afternoon. Now, for the rest of the
news.
DATELINE - Monday December 30. Dad calls Alpin Haus, our motorhome dealer,
early in the morning. "Is the coach ready to be picked up?" he asks. After
asking around, it was determined that the unit was complete and ready to
take home.
10:30am - Dad and I jumped into the Monte Carlo and headed for Albany, New
York. We arrive around 2:30pm, where we meet the front door receptionist,
who passes us on the salesman #1, who then passes us on to salesman #2. The
guy who sold us the unit was on vacation, and so was his boss. Follow me so
far?
2:30pm - We sit in salesman #2's office, signing all kinds of stuff.
Salesman #2 asks about payment and Dad replies "I'd kinda like to see the
thing first, before I pay."
2:45pm - We get taken to the service bay. That should've been our first
clue . the service bay. They're just doing some finishing touches on the
satellite system, is what we're told. Dad looks at the front and the rear
of the motorhome and determines there is no power hookup. The airbrake
system outlets (glad-hands) to the trailer are also missing. They then take
the unit outside to finish the satellite.
3:30pm - After killing time in the showroom, we get an outside tour of the
motorhome. That's when the tour guide, salesman #3, opened the compartment
containing the "oversize" holding tanks. We paid for the option to have our
tanks expanded 40%. We asked salesman #3 if those were actually bigger than
normal and he didn't think so. Later, we saw a sticker showing the weight
capacity of the tanks. Dad did some quick math, and determined that the
tanks were normal size.
We then found out the CSA sticker was missing, another option we paid for.
CSA = Canadian Something Association. ($300 US to approve something)
4:30pm - We get the inside tour of the motorhome. Finally, some highlights.
The generator system is absolutely incredible. You need to read a manual
to learn about all of the generator options. Some of which include (1)
Charging the batteries . when the batteries get to your selected low level,
the generator will automatically start and charge the batteries to your
desired high level. (2) You can also select a "quiet time", when your
generator will not start . like say while your sleeping.
One more note on the generator. We said we would like the 12,000-watt
generator and would gladly pay the price difference. Apparently that option
was no good because the 12,000 would not fit. Well, Dad acquired some Onan
literature, and noticed that both generators have the exact same outer
dimensions. Dad left messages for the sales manager months ago, but his
calls were never returned. The generator in this unit was the 10,000.
Back to the positive stuff . there are about five generator start switches
throughout the motorhome. A very nice feature, especially when we are used
to having a single start button. The holding tank drain compartment is very
nice, with added features like a paper towel rack, soap dispenser, shower
hose, and a light. Dumping in the dark is always a fun and story-telling
adventure. The tag axle, air bag pressure is adjustable to compensate for
heavier loads (like say with or without a 20,000 pound trailer) and retracts
(lifts) for maneuvering, such as backing into Flying J parking spots.
6:30pm - Salesman #4 and Salesman #5 start giving us ideas as to how to get
the missing options installed.
7:00pm - We left Alpin Haus . without the motorhome. We're not sure what is
happening with our incomplete options. They have asked us to get them
completed at the Monaco factory in Indiana. The glad-hands would probably
have to be installed in Barrie, Ontario. Dad liked the job that was done by
the Barrie guys on our freightliner.
But, as you are probably aware, it creates a small amount of stress and a
little financial problem. IE: We paid for options that are not on the
motorhome. We'll have to take the time/expense to travel to the factory in
Indiana, and we'll have to take the time/expense to travel to Barrie.
Should be another "story-telling" couple of weeks ahead of us.
And to think, I was worried I wouldn't have anything to talk about in the
off-season.
Happy New Year !!!
