25th 1999 SERIES
REVISION! from
Jan. 29th 1999
NHRA Northwest Division . .
. . . Director
Chris Blair has confirmed some revised plans for the major new
drag racing series announced in Western Canada this summer. The
original five event NHRA Canadian National Open Series has been
shaved to four events after the planned stop at Saskatoon
International Raceway was nixed due to various logistic reasons.
Instead the series will now open at Edmonton's
Labatt Raceway (July 3/4) and be followed by subsequent dates
at Mission Raceway Park
(July 24/25), Calgary's
Race City Speedway (Aug. 14/15) The circuit will hold it's finale
at Wyatt McMurray's Eagle Motorplex near Ashcroft,
BC (Sep. 25/26).
Saskatoon will go forward with it's scheduled track enhancements
and will be awarded a NHRA Canadian National Open Series stop
in 2000. Canadian National Champions will be crowned in Super
Street, Super Gas, Super Comp, Stock/Super Stock Combo and Motorcycle.
Provincial Bracket Champions will also be determined in Super
Pro, Pro, Sportsman and Junior Dragster.

25th 1999 TOP
COMP CLARIFIED! from
Jan. 29th 1999
The new Western Canadian . .
. . . NHRA
Canadian National Open Series will also preview an experimental
class for NHRA called Top Comp. Basically a Quick 32 -- similar
to IHRA Top Sportsman and Top Dragster the new category will target
machines capable of running in the 6.30 to 7.99 seconds zone.
That will likely produce a good mixture of dragsters, altereds,
Pro Modifieds and Pro Street machinery. The Inaugural 1999 season
will see Top Comp racing limited to the Mission and Ashcroft events
only. Track management at Calgary and Edmonton have elected to
give the new category one year to grow before introducing it further
east at their tracks in the year 2000.

100% CANADIAN . . .
. . . Eastern Canada's fledging
new Stock/Super Stock Championship Series will be bigger and better
in 1999. Series organizer Doug Box confirmed that the circuit
will hold six official points races double dipping St.
Thomas Dragway, Grand Bend
Motorplex and Cayuga International
Dragway Park. The kickoff race will be at Grand Bend on May 8th.
The sponsorship lineup for 1999 is an impressive one. In addition
to the return of Smith Performance Specialties and Ben Grievers
(Firestone), UAP/Napa, Dana Corp and Performance Cellar have stepped
up to the plate. Racers can claim points at five of the six events
towards the overall championship. There will also be a number
of non-points "shootout" events where races run for cash only.
Racers and fans wanting to know more should contact Box at 519-686-8457.
KUDOS . . .
. . . DragRaceCanada congratulates
the most recent drag racing inductees into the Canadian Motorsports
Hall of Fame. On Feb. 20th, 1999 at the gala annual event at the
Westin Harbor Castle Hotel in Toronto, the legendary "Border Bandits"
team of Sandy Elliot, Barrie Poole and John Elliot and Mission
Raceway Park founder Ron Farmer received their dues. Sandy Elliot's
Ford Mustang team was the first Canadians ever to win in NHRA
national event competition, and Farmer's name is synonymous with
the growth and success of drag racing in British Columbia.
OUTLAW PRO MODS . . .
. . . The rules for Eastern
Canada's 1999 Canadian Pro Modified Championships have been confirmed.
The seven event series will feature both 8 and 16 car qualified
fields. The "Outlaw" Canadian Pro Modified class format rules
differ somewhat to the IHRA legal standards, primarily concerning
supercharger overdrive percentage. Hi Helix blowers are allowed
with 40% overdrive on any wedge engine. Hemi powered Pro Mods
are limited to 30% however billet heads are legal. There is no
maximum cubic inch engine displacement limitation and 3-disc clutch
configurations are allowed. Minimum weights are 2600 lbs for supercharged
cars and 2450 for nitrous-injected machinery. All other IHRA Pro
Mod class rules apply that have not been specifically modified
for the Canadian series.
