QUIET BEFORE THE STORM?

The latest from the Canadian Pro Stock camp of Larry and Wayne O’Brien has development work progressing nicely for their much-anticipated Hemi-powered mountain motored Dodge Avenger. According to driver Larry O’Brien, “We had to develop another new cylinder head and we are very pleased with the results. We have spent countless hours over the winter.” O’Brien, who is from Windsor, ON., has been absent from the IHRA tour since switching back to Mopar from Ford at the end of the 1998 season. He revealed that his team will not return until they are fully armed. “We will continue to be a “no show” until I’m convinced we can run up front,” he added. “We have a simple three step strategy. Number one – get good flow numbers – which we have now accomplished. Number two – get good dyno numbers – which we are confident we can now achieve. Number three – track testing. I hope to be doing that by the end of May.”

O’Brien revealed that it doubtful that his 815 CID Hemi Avenger will be ready for competition in time for the Mopar Parts Canadian Nationals. “I won’t completely rule that event out – but it’s more likely we will return at either Cordova or New York Raceway.”

CANADIAN ON THE PROWL

Pro Comp dragster racing standout Scott Wildgust from Stratford, ON., will hit the tracks this season with a wild new Plymouth Prowler intended for IHRA Top Dragster or Pro Outlaw competition. Wildgust’s machine features a Spitzer chassis which was updated by Bruce Ziegler Race Cars (London, ON). Initially power will come from a Atchison Machine Service 427 CID supercharged Chevy through a 3-speed Lenco Transmission however a switch to a larger 560 CID engine is planned. Wildgust will debut and test the car in early May at Grand Bend and will surely be a top Canadian attraction at the IHRA Mopar Parts Canadian Nationals.

ROUGH FIRST RIDE
Calgary's Rick Distefano made his NHRA Pro Stock Truck class debut during the NHRA Summitracing.com Nationals in Las Vegas. New truck blues and extremely hot weather conditions prevented the great looking machine from qualifying. Distefano ran a best of only 8.466 secs -- but look for quicker times in the near future....
