When George Swann of Burnaby, B.C. set out to build his own AA/Fuel Dragster in his carport some six years ago, he never could have imagined it would be such a long and winding road. After seeing the rules change a few times over the course of the car’s construction, which saw him having to thicken the roll cage tubing at the beginning of this year, among other things, Swann was finally ready to unleash the car under its own power this summer. The 30-year dragster veteran still had to get himself licensed, and that meant several launches and abbreviated runs, a few of which he accomplished at Mission during the Pro Mod weekend. It sure brought back memories to hear the sound of an iron-block 392 cackling, and George’s goal is to have the car sorted out by next season so he can run some of the bigger U.S. nostalgia events. Ken Perry, from Toronto, has debuted Canada's newest FMD entry. The 285 CID Brad Hadman chassied machine features all the latest pieces including a Fontana motor, a PSI screw blower and the latest generation Lenco transmission. Perry, who formally raced in Super Comp, is close to completing his license upgrade and hopes to make his NHRA debut at the Division One points race at Cecil County PA later in August. With a limiter installed -- Perry has carded a quick 6.36 secs so far. He reports that car has all the components to run in the 5.6 secs zone. There is also a good chance the new Canadian team will run the car with an injected nitro motor in 2001. (Bruce Biegler photo)
