Calgary's Mostowich Wins at Pomona!
Bruce Biegler - November 22, 2004

Outstanding Western Canadian Sportsman racer Ken Mostowich scored his biggest career victory on Nov. 14th, taking the Super Gas title during NHRA's season finale event in California...

Driving his Don Davis-built "topless" '99 Corvette, Mostowich earned his first NHRA national event title following an impressive 7-round winning display during the AAA Auto Club Finals. Ken used a final round 9.864 secs at 156.59 mph to seal the event victory after his opponent, California's Joe Roubicek, had a -.004 foul start driving his Corvette. Prior to that Mostowich had recorded consecutive laps of 9.905, 9.900 and 9.902 secs while winning in rounds four through six. The victory was Mostowich's first at the national event level in 11 years of racing in the highly competitive Super Gas 9.90 class.

"This certainly feels like vindication -- it's been a long time coming," said the relieved racer. "We've been in a position to win before but just couldn't pull it off. Last year we qualified #1 and went to the fourth round. I've also been to the semi finals at this race before so to finally win it -- feels just great. When I ran that perfect 9.900 in the 5th round even though I was on the brakes -- I got the feeling that something good was happening."

Mostowich's win came driving a car which was in fact crashed last summer during the IHRA's national event race held at Edmonton. Mostowich reported however that the car was rebuilt quickly thanks to Rowdy Racing (Calgary).

"After the crash at Edmonton we had to pretty much front half the car and also repair the body," Ken revealed. "But when you are serious about racing it seems that everyone will pitch in to do what needs to be done. That was certainly my case. Since the repairs the car has worked extremely well -- they did an excellent job."

Ken also cited the talents of his crew and credited his engine builder following his victory.

"I wouldn't be here without the dedication of my crew members Charlie Marsh and Dave Holz," Ken added. "They transport the cars to and from the events and do the majority of the work and preparation. When I get to the track I'm able to just focus on driving -- and that has been a key factor. I also have to thank my engine builder Terry Kershaw (Kershaw Performance - Langley BC). The motor he built (a 439 CID Chevy) is deadly consistent and it just never breaks despite all we put it through. There is no doubt it is one of the scariest small blocks out there -- in fact most people are convinced we run a big block."
