Medicine Hat National Open Results
Bruce Biegler/Todd Young - Septmber 29, 2005
In a true testament to the vast and ongoing improvements at what is now the province of Alberta’s only NHRA sanctioned drag strip, the Medicine Hat Drag Racers Association hosted earlier this month its largest event ever. Over the Labor Day holiday weekend, their first official NHRA Northwest Division National Open was presented. The marquee event attracted racers from three Western provinces as well as racers from the Pacific Northwest states.
The Stock/Super Stock combo class drew the biggest turnout with 35 entries and that class featured a big win by Edmonton’s Ed Matiejewski driving his reliable '71 Chevy Nova. Matiejewski held off the spectacular new '05 Chevy Cavailer driven by Cameron Kallas in the championship round with a run of 12.44 secs at 105 mph to 9.59 secs at 137 mph.
Stock/Super Stock combo action also featured new official NHRA national record marks in three classes. Cam Chowen (of Prince George, B.C) reset the G/Stock mark at 11.85 secs, Randy Hutchings (Calgary, AB) set the M/SA ET record at 12.17 secs and Tom Nolan (Lacombe, AB) driving the former FJ Smith Chevy S-10, clocked a 10.10 secs in GT/TA.
Other NHRA class event winners included Daryl Baker (Super Gas), Warren Neitch (Super Street) and John Genovese (Top Comp)
