Super Street – Prime Time!
Bruce Biegler - August 15, 2007
Eastern drag racing fans are in for a serious treat (August 24-26th) when Ontario-based fast street car proponent Joe DaSilva presents the largest street legal drag racing event held north of the 49th parallel – the Canadian Street Car Nationals – at Toronto Motorsports Park.
The event, which is in fact the 15th annual feature race choreographed by DaSilva, is expected to attract an international and star-studded field. Each year the Canadian Street Car Nationals continues to gain momentum and is now widely being regarded as “Orlando North”.
Fans will be treated to three days of competition which will see top rated drag racers, many of which will be making their only scheduled Canadian appearances, compete for a huge guaranteed payout.
“This is our biggest event ever -- our expectations are that over 300 race teams will be entered from the many different circuits of Fast Street car racing,” said DaSilva. “We have guaranteed purses including $15,000 to win in Super Street 10.5. In addition fans will be treated to Jet car exhibition runs, the Can-Am Stock/Super Stock series, Rock bands and a gigantic car show which will be presented immediately adjacent to the track.”
The event will include the highly popular Outlaw Pro Street car class. That category, which features some of the fastest and most outrageous looking machines in the world, will see top ranked drivers competing for a slot in an exclusive 8-car qualified field.
“A very important aspect to our event is that it is fan and racer friendly,” added DaSilva. “We are focused on building a friendly racing rivalry between our two great nations and we do everything we can to make it a positive experience for everyone involved. The bottom line is that it needs to be a fun time for all.”
One of the many invading feature racers this year is Billy Glidden, 2nd generation drag racer and son to legendary Bob Glidden. Glidden, from Indiana, will enter his fantastic Ford Mustang in the Super Street 10.5 category. That car which features a small-block Ford engine and a single carburetor has (with nitrous oxide) run in the mid 6.8 secs zone at over 210 mph.
“We came up to Toronto for the first time last year,” Glidden said. “We found it to be a great reception and the track preparation was awesome – so we are looking forward to coming back. Brian Carpenter ran a 6.85 (secs) at the race last year but if the conditions are right I think you will see that record broken.”
