Castrol Raceway's "Hot August Night"
Austin Ogonoski - August 16, 2006
Castrol Raceways 2007 edition of Hot August Nite was completed this past Tuesday, a week later than the actual planned event. The original date for the event was August 8th. Last week, fans were treated to one round of Jets before the rain started. The event was postponed to this week. Most of the competitors were able to return along with the huge crowd.
The Top Alcohol funny car field included four contestants, John Evanchuk, Nathan Sitko, Kevin Therres and Ken Kraus. Every one of them ran well but couldn’t match local boy John Evanchuck. John smashed the track record, for both MPH and low ET, running a 5.724 @ 251.67 MPH. Ken Kraus also had a decent attempt at the record, running a 5.81 @ 249 MPH.
Cal Tebb had a little fun in pristine ’55 Chevy, Nostalgia TA/FC. Cal plans to run exhibitions and match races with the Chevy body and continue running with the TA/FC class with his ‘02 Firebird body.
Newly licensed, Troy Sitko took his Top Alcohol Dragster for a ride. You may recognize the paint as his Uncle, Steve Sitko, used to be the pilot. Steve retired from racing about 6 years ago.
The IBAA Pro Nostalgia saw some decent match racing. Every car in the class was running in the mid-to-low 7.50’s, which provided some solid side-by-side action. Jason Bussey would put his dodge up front, running the closest to their index with a 7.507. Other drivers included Darrell Webb, Joey Steckler, Cory kincaid, Tim Boychuk, Rod Elliott , Mark Campbell and Eddy Plaizier. New to the IBAA is member Cory Sekura, from Drayton Valley, Alberta; driving an 84 Trans Am styled body.
As for Nitro cars, Jason Duchene had a little more than just an average pass in his 2002 Camaro. Jason ran a solid 5.600 at 281.34 MPH. What looked like a minor engine problem at the top end turned into an oil fire. The fire was quickly put out and Jason was just fine. Randy Bykowsky was on a solid run when the blower belt let go.
The Nostalgia Nitro pairing was Terry Capp and Jay Mageau. The cars sounded crisp in the night air. Mageau had some problems at the line but then was off. Nothing prevented Capp from running a 6.152 @ 236.03 MPH to Jay’s 7.384 at 193.46 MPH. Terry’s 1st run was a 6.13.3 at 237.84 MPH.
The Jets are always a favorite and put on a great show for the crowd. Included in the program was Kevin Therres with his “Bio-Diesel”powered car. Chuck Haynes, Bruce Andrews, and husband and wife team Brad and Heather Janishewski. During Heather’s final run of the night, she decided to smoke out the fans, going the entire quarter mile with just smoke and no flame. It was very cool. Chuck Haynes was pulling double duty driving both Volcano and Gravity Storm. Chuck was the only one to make it over the 300 MPH mark with a 5.211 at 308.32 MPH.
