TMP Street Legal Shootout - Round 2 Report
Mark Ackert - July 9, 2007

After a rain plagued race #1, the second race of Toronto Motorsport Park’s StreetLegal ShootOut would be played out under partially cloudy but dry conditions. Some new faces were out for race number two as well as some new cars. Saturday would lead to some incredible qualifying action but for Ellen Pavao, the action was anything but sweet. Ellen’s beautiful 67 Super Street Camaro was damaged in a wild roll over that when the smoke had cleared, had the car resting on top of the guardrail. The problem happened right off the line so luckily the Camaro hadn’t built up much speed yet. Ellen was visibly upset as she got out of the car but she came away with only a few bumps and bruises. Danny Medeiros had his beautiful 1970 and a half Camaro out for race #2. The car may have a new powerplant and paint job but this thing has been around since the inception of the fast street car scene in Ontario. Formerly Silver with black stripes, this home built 25-2 spec Camaro is now orange with black stripes and is powered by a Nitrous injected small block so when the team works out the bugs, this hot rod should rock the EZ Street class. The tough luck story of the weekend aside from Pavao’s roll over had to be Joe Wild. Joe is always in the hunt and seems to be in the finals at every race. Race number two would see Wild paired up against the super fast 87 Camaro of Darcy Cummins. Cummins in the first round laid down a blistering 8.09 to defeat Steve Falle and also register the fastest True Street pass in the history of the OSCA and now StreetLegal Series. In the finals, the Wildman treed Cummins and was way out in front after the Camaro bobbled off the line. Joe’s Nitrous breathing 85 Mustang was on a great pass when it decided to “Pop” at the 1000 foot mark. A large fireball and cloud of smoke ensued. Coasting towards the finish line sporting a new vented oil pan, everyone at the line watched as he got closer and closer, as Cummins poured it on trying to catch him. The cloud of smoke engulfed both lanes but with the tim ing light still in view, the win light became visible in Cummins lane. Darcy would come back to run 8.83 at 171mph as Joe Wild coasted through in 8.99 seconds at 139mph.

The Super Street final would see two of Canada’s heavy hitters battle it out for the big cheque. John Carinci and his beautiful 70 Cuda would line up against the flat black 68 Chevelle of Rocky Delicce. Delicce was out of the gate first and motored straight down Broadway as Carinci’s Cuda made an abrupt move towards the wall right off the line ending h is chances. Delicce would hammer down a 7.14 at 204mph to take the win. Mike Yedgarian won the Via Trailers Super Street Low ET Award of $250.

Bill Richardson from London, Ontario, was a no show for race #1 but EZ Street competitors would get a chance to line up against him at the second race of the season after they completed the last few touches on their 7 second Mustang. Joe Carano would be up to the task after laying down 8.0 passes all weekend long.&n bsp; He got his chance as the pair met up in what fans hoped would be a side by side 7 second final. Carano left first but hazed the tires just enough to take him out of contention. Richardson rattled the tires but drove through it and registered the fastest EZ Street pass of the weekend stopping the clocks in 7.97 seconds at a top speed of 181mph.

Jeff Biro would take the win in Pro Stock as his 69 Camaro ran 8.89 at 155mph to defeat John Cudizio who’s 1990 Firebird would run 9.06 at 149mph.

Glenn Luuk took home a hard fought win in Open Comp defeating Randy Nunn in the finals. Luuk also won the Full Throttle Welding .000 reaction time bonus of $200 after cutting a perfect .000 light in round number one.

At the start of the race I told Vinnie Bombini I would get some shots of him in the winners circle. He didn’t disappoint as he loaded all his competitors on the trailer including Rick Schultz in the finals to take a well deserved win in Pro Comp. Congratulations are also in order for Pro Comp competitor Dave Crumb who made it to the semi finals and for the first time since 1971, won money drag racing!
