Fast Street Car Firsts!
Bruce Biegler - November 26, 2007

While their awesome supercharged ’68 Chevelle does in fact look very stealth – for Toronto-area racer Rocky Delicce, his 2007 racing season was anything but off the radar.

Delicce, who lives in Woodbridge, quietly and effectively came from being a relative unknown name to grabbing headlines and making Canada proud when he prevailed to win not one – but two – major Street Car Championship titles last season.

Delicce prevailed in the Outlaw 10.5 Super Street category for both the six-race NSCA series in the U.S.A and also for Toronto Motorsports Parks’ 5-event Street Legal Shootout. Remarkably, the titles came in what was Delicce’s first full season in the Outlaw 10.5 category.

“Overall these results were really unexpected,” said Delicce, whose involvement with Canada’s Fast Street Car scene dates back to 1998. “Going into the season we really had a rather conservative objective – just race one round at a time. We had only debuted the car in the class in late 2006. But when we managed to set two records at the first NSCA race and then win at the second event – that changed our focus.”

In total, Delicce won three times in ‘07 on the NSCA tour scoring major victories at Atco, NJ and then Thompson and Columbus Ohio. He matched that record to the tee by earning three wins at home track TMP within the Street Legal Shootout series. As fate would have it, he clinched both titles during the respective last races of season in each circuit.

“Both circuits have a lot of fast cars and great drivers,” added Rocky. “What we were able to accomplish as a team this season hasn’t really sunk in yet.”

Delicce was quick to credit his talented supporting cast and sponsors; including crew chief Angelo Aceto, crewmember “Mills”, Midway Automotive, Moore Fabrication, Hutch Transmissions, and Mike Taylor (Tailored by Mike).

For Delicce’s crew chief Angelo Aceto, who helped choreograph a season fast 6.93 secs at 212 mph, the ’07 season was also truly gratifying.

“Just to be able to work with a guy like Rocky was a real honor,” said Aceto, who is the co-owner of Midway Automotive (Mississauga). “He proved himself to be a great driver this season but he also let us run with the reins. Our team learned an awful lot this season about running so much power through a small tire. We took mostly baby steps all the way and turned that into consistency and winning.”

The Fast Street Car title wins are also additional feathers in the cap for Canada’s top-ranked tuner and engine builder Al Billes. Frank and Angelo confirmed that Al’s valuable assembly and dyno work for his alcohol-burning 526 CID Brad Anderson engine was another absolute key to their season success.
