TMP Super Street Finale
Mark Ackert - October 23, 2007

The last Street Legal ShootOut event of the season at Toronto Motorsport Park proved to be a long and trying weekend for everyone involved. Many personal best’s were accomplished as the cool weather helped the cars reach some incredible numbers. One of the most notable was that of Frank Pompilio and his twin turbo 67 Mustang. Everything seemed to click for the team as they dipped their beautiful Super Street Stang into the 6’s for the first time running an impressive 6.94 at 206mph. Pompilio’s first elimination pass would be a single so he came out and drove the Mustang to a stout 6.90 with some saying the car tripped the finish line beams with the back tires as the car dangled the wheels a foot in the air going through the traps. Pompilio would meet up with the Stealth Bom ber piloted by Rocky Delicce in the finals. Delicce qualified his cool 68 Chevelle in the #2 slot running 6.96 at 208mph. The finals were run under the lights where Delicce motored down the track clicking off a 7.09 at a slowing 184mph. Delicce was ready for a side by side 6 second pass as shown by his .012 reaction time but unfortunately Pompilio skied the wheels a couple times before deciding to lift. Congrats to Delicce for taking the Street Legal ShootOut Championship as well as winning the NSCA Super Street Championship south of the border.

EZ Street had some wild wheels up guardrail to guardrail action. After qualifying, Steve Damianidis would be in the top spot after finally getting his hard launching 68 Camaro into the 7’s. Joe Carano also dipped into the 7’s qualifying #3 with a 7.97. The #2 spot was held by Bill Richardson who would meet up with the unique 1986 Grand Prix of Sam Furfaro. After launching hard Furfaro’s Grand Prix got out of shape and while trying to recover the car rolled the tire which sent the car into a slow motion roll over. After spinning on the roof, Sam, with the help of TMP safety staff would exit the vehicle unhurt. Richardson unaware of the happenings behind him would set the pace for round #2 as he clicked off a 7.94 at 180mph. Unfortunately for Richardson, while on a single pass in the second round the car got out of shape and after he tripped the lights at another 7.94 pass the car made hard contact with the right wall. The car then came back across making contact with the left side as well. Before Emergency crews were even to the car the door was opening and Bill was exiting the vehicle. A true testament of how well these cars are built.

Another EZ street competitor to leave his mark on the walls at TMP was Steve Argiropoulos. His high flying 91 Mustang made contact after getting out of shape after a wicked wheelstand. The crew had things duck taped up and ready to go for round #1 where he would eventually be defeated by Joe Carano. Carano met up with the 7 second bracket car of Steve Damianidis in the finals. Splash had his Camaro in the 7’s again running 7.96 but Carano nailed the tree so his 8.02 would hold up for the victory.

True Street would be an all Mustang final as Steve Falle took on Steve Alvi. Alvi had a mix up on the line resulting in the win going to Falle.

Pro Stock competitors have only been able to watch as the last couple races were dominated by Lane Lambert. The beautiful 69 Dart of Lambert has been consistently in the mid 8’s which has been untouchable thus far. Tom Craig would get his hard launching 84 Camaro into the finals to face Lambert. Just like in previous rounds, Lambert’s 8.63 at 157mph was just too fast for his competitor so he took the win defeating Craig’s hard charging 9.12 at 146mph.

Other winners included:

7.90 Winner Rich Mason R/U Shawn Morrell
8.90 Winner John McIntyre R/U Will Keizer
9.90 Winner Steve Price R/U Mike Seales

The event also had some added attractions. Terry Brown, Bruce Boland and Andy Rankin came out and did some testing. Terry Brown made hard contact with both walls after the motor let loose on his second pass during a race against Boland. The 71 Challenger sustained heavy damage but Terry was able to walk away under his own power.
