Seeing Red in Alberta!
Bruce Biegler - September 19, 2007

The scenic Central Alberta city of Red Deer is home base to what is one of the most impressive Sportsman drag racing teams in all of Canada.

Originated and spearheaded by long time Canadian Super Stock racer Byron Setters, a former NHRA national event winner (Las Vegas – 2001), the team now encompasses not only Byron, but also son Casey (27) and daughter Caitlan (23) who together actively race a multi-car operation. The trio runs mostly NHRA Division Six circuit races as well as select NHRA and IHRA national events.

The team’s 3-car attack is an all “Bowtie” affair. Bryon drives a Gary Hansen-built 2005 Chevy Cavalier which runs a 295 HP 350 CID in the GT/AA category. The team’s 1994 Camaro is driven by Caitlan. That car is run as a GT/EA with a 255 HP 350 CID engine. Casey Setters drives the team’s most recent acquisition, a GT/DA 2002 Firebird which was acquired during the 2006 season from Sean Cour. That car is powered by a 295 HP 350 CID engine.

Both Casey and Caitlan attended Frank Hawley’s drag racing school before cutting their teeth racing in the 1994 Camaro. The racing operation helps to maintain a very close family bond which is something that Byron Setters enjoys immensely.

“It’s just terrific for me personally to be able to race with them,” said Byron. “It’s a great way to interact with my family and to be honest I get more excited watching them win rounds then when I do. It’s hard to describe other then that it’s an extra special feeling.”

Off track, the next generation Setters are also involved within Byron’s highly successful company which he founded and operates with his brother Wylson -- Setters & Sons Construction Ltd. That company specializes in excavating, road building, asphalt and oil field hauling. It is also the race team’s primary sponsor.

“Both kids work hard for the company and at the races,” Byron added. “Casey just finished Engineering School and Caitlan Business College. They have both shown the desire.”

The team is also about as Professional as they come in Sportsman drag racing including an impressive 3-car hauler and transport truck. They rely heavily on crew chief Orlean Nauert who is tasked with overseeing all maintenance and tuning.
