Lazzaro’s Heavy Hand
Bruce Biegler - November 25, 2008
During 2008, longtime Canadian Fast Street Car proponent Steve Lazzaro enjoyed his most successful year ever drag racing.
The Maple, Ontario-based owner of Carwell Construction, managed to take his tried-and- true turbocharged ’69 Camaro to new heights. Not only did Lazzaro prevail to win a coveted OSCA points championship title at Toronto Motorsports Park, he also earned an enormous win during the high profile independent “Shakedown at E-Town” last September. That Outlaw event was held at New Jersey’s Old Bridge Township Raceway. Along that season path, Lazzaro was also credited with all time quick runs within his Fast Street Car category.
“2008 was all about the people around us,” said Lazzaro. “During 2007 we did struggle but for 2008 we re-grouped with help from Steve Petty (Pro-Line) and Joey Bell (Bell Chassis). We made a plan over last winter and we executed it. Everything fell together for us.”
Lazzaro’s stunning silver and very stock looking Camaro is truly a technological marvel. He has been racing that car for many seasons and it has seen a rather constant evolution.
“I’ve redone the car three times now,” Steve continued. “For this season we switched from a small block to a 550 CID big block GM engine by Pro-Line. That has twin turbochargers system by Precision.”
Lazzaro races his car in both the Super Street 10.5 category and also within the Heavy Street class. They were credited with a superb 6.72 secs run and a whopping speed of 219.94 mph in Super Street trim at Cayuga last season. Then he ran a numbing 6.707 secs while winning the E-Town Shakedown race. That elapsed time was the quickest ever seen in Heavy Street car racing.
“Our trip to Englishtown in September was a very rewarding experience,” Steve added. “We had been watching that event for 3 years or so but we finally were able to attend. The facility and track prep was great and the level of cars was outstanding. To win was unexpected for us but also very exciting,”
Lazzaro was also quick to credit Jimmy Blackman (at Straight Line) along with his dedicated crew which consists of his brother Joe Lazzaro, Dennis Foisy and fellow Street Car racer John Carinci. He team’s success was also buoyed by valued associate sponsors, Precision Turbo, M/T tires and VP Racing Fuels.
