Canadian Pro Mod star Car "Big Dog" Spiering ended the 2004 racing season in high gear at IHRA Rockingham -- collecting both career best times and a highly prestigous award....
Jordan Station, ON -- Carl “Big Dog” Spiering and the Eaton Cutler-Hammer Motorsports Pro Modified team enjoyed their best outing of the season during last weekend's 9th Annual Bethesda Softworks World Finals, at North Carolina’s Rockingham Dragway. The event, which was the season finale for the 2004 IHRA Hooters Drag Racing Series, is widely regarded as one of the most prestigious overall within the entire IHRA season tour.
All of the previous hard work by Carl’s team this season paid high dividends at the event as they were rewarded with an onslaught of career best elapsed times and a superb semi-final round placing. During time trails the Eaton Cutler Hammer ’63 Corvette got progressively faster with consecutive times of 6.188 secs, 6.173 secs and 6.127 secs, to qualify #4. During eliminations Spiering powered his machine past Eddie Ware and Chip King in rounds one and two before losing a spirited match to eventual overall winner (and fellow Canadian Al Billes) in the semi-final round; 6.195 sec 226.70 mph to 6.256 sec 225.03 mph.
“It was my best showing ever at Rockingham Dragway,” said Spiering who had previously never qualified while racing at the facility. “We knew going into the event that the conditions were phenomenal and also that our car and engine program were working well. Our first run down track affirmed that notion. On Saturday night we made some big changes and I got to race along side Al Billes in the last pairing. That was exciting -- we were glued together all the way down track and when I crossed the finish line with him -- I knew it was fast. On Sunday we ran well too. In the third round Al just flat outran me -- that‘s the bottom-line. He is a great racer - and there is no shame losing to Al Billes.”
“Overall it was really exciting for our team and our sponsors to finish off our season on such a high note. I think we showed everybody we have the ability and that our program has come right along as expected.”
The Eaton Cutler-Hammer Motorsports team also received some high marks at the event from the IHRA technical committee. The Tim McAmis built ‘63 Corvette was selected overall as the event’s “Best Engineered Car.”
“That is a very prestigious award,” added Spiering. “It means a lot because it is really a coast-to-coast view of the car by people that inspect it very closely.”
The Rockingham event concluded the 2004 “Ultimate Power Trip II” racing season for the Eaton Cutler-Hammer Motorsports team. Carl and his team mates would like to thank all of their valuable major and associate sponsors in 2004 including: Pace American, The Trailer Shop, Yamaha, Optima Industries, VP Fuels, Excel Tool & Machine, Hoosier Tire Canada, BRP Bicknell, Weld Racing, Fioravanti Custom Engines, Alan Johnson Performance Engineering, Tim McAmis Race Cars, DragRaceCanada.com, Performance Racing News, Pennzoil, and Fast Eddie Racewear.
