Al Billes, a six time IHRA National event Champion is undisputed as Canada's premier Pro Modified class racer. Born, October 4th, 1965, the Engineering Degree Graduate has been active on the North American drag racing circuit since the mid 1980s. As as driver and team owner, he is reputed for his lightning quick reflexes, mechanical innovation and competitive nature. Al Billes has campaigned a series of highly successful race cars during his career including supercharged alcohol Funny Cars and both nitrous-injected and supercharged Pro Modified cars.
During mid-season 2001, Al Billes debuted his latest creation, a radical '53 Studebaker replica built by Australia's Murray Anderson. That car features numerous mechanical innovations including many one-of-a-kind and personal touches unique to Al Billes Racing. Power comes from 526 CID aluminum Oldsmobile engine which was designed an built in-house at Al Billes Racing's Barrie, Ontario headquarters. That motor is equipped with Alan Johnson cylinder heads and a Kobelco supercharger. The estimated 2500+ horsepower is transferred through a Crower 2-disc clutch, a Lenco 3-speed transmission and ultimately to giant Hoosier slicks mounted on Weld wheels.
To date Al Billes Racing has developed an impressive racing resume which includes multiple IHRA national event wins in both Alcohol Funny Car and Pro Modified classes. Al Billes has three IHRA national event wins in a Funny Car and four national titles driving in Pro Modified. He has been a consistent "Top 10" finisher in final IHRA World Championship points. In fact he just missed winning the overall IHRA World Championship titles in both 1991 and 1992 when he placed second (both years) behind Pro Mod class icon Scotty Cannon. Al Billes has numerous record setting runs to his credit. He has held both the IHRA national elapsed time and MPH marks during his career as well as shattering numerous track records in both Canada and the USA. During his Alcohol Funny Car racing days, Al Billes was credited with wins at both the NHRA Divisional level as well as major feature race titles.
