Few Canadian racing fans will argue that the fantastic '51
Ford Mercury raced by the father and son team of Sam and Doug
Blowes, from Stratford, ON., is not one of Canada's all time
coolest drag racing vehicles. The immaculately prepared all-steel
bodied machine was originally a show vehicle that has evolved
into an enormous fan favourite at Ontario drag strips. The
truck is 100% built in Canada and weighs 3000 lbs. Power comes
from an Atchison Machine-built supercharged and methanol-burning
468 CID BB Chevrolet.
The father and son racing team got their start in Motorsports
back in 1983 on the tractor-pulling scene. They campaigned
a small-block powered tractor all over Ontario for a few seasons.
After that the '51 Mercury 1/2 truck was acquired and constructed
for Street and Show -- but that did not last long. The truck
soon found its way to the drag strip (London Motorsports Park)
and ran about 16 secs first time out.
That performance wasn't good enough and over the next eight
seasons the team spent endless time and money to build Canada's
fastest all steel nostalgia truck. During late 2000, driver
Doug Blowes, who is a Mechanical Engineering Tech and Technical
Sales Manager, had his quickest and fastest ride yet -- an
incredible 7.96 secs and 170.89 mph.
The team continues to build improvements into the truck.
An all-tubular chrome-molly frame is in the works for the
2002 season. Crew Chief Sam Blowes, who owns a travel agency
(Blowes Travel - Stratford), has affirmed that newly acquired
major sponsorship from Prestone is allowing the team more
latitude to make improvements and run more aggressively.
