Jim McCann is a well-known name amongst drag racing circles in Eastern Canada. His colourful racing career spans back to 1965 and includes a variety of very competitive drag racing vehicles. His first ride was a D/Gas '55 Chevy before teaming up with fellow Ontario drag racing proponents John Waldie and Kenny Lee and racing a GMC 6-cylinder powered dragster in NHRA Modified eliminator. That was followed by a Stock eliminator '68 Z-28 Camaro and a national-record holding SS/IA '67 Camaro. From 1989 to 1994, Jim McCann raced in the Econo classes with a D/EA and K/EA 23T before switching to a 4-cylinder F/ED. In 1993-94 he tried his hand in NHRA Pro Stock with a Pontiac Firebird driven by Kenny Lee and attending a total of 7 events -- running a best of 7.16 secs at 193.50 mph.
The year 1995 saw Jim McCann first switch to the fast dragster class with a Mike Bos built machine that he raced for 3 years. In 1999 he took delivery of a 265 inch John Chandler-built dragster which he continues to campaign on the local Ontario Pro Comp and IHRA Top Dragster circuit.
Jim McCann's current dragster weights 1690 lbs and features a couple of unique supercharged small block Chevrolet motor combinations. They are a 377 CID that produces approximately 1500 HP and a all aluminum 388 CID that is rated at 1600 HP. Those engines were assembled by McCann after expert machining at Ron's Precision Machine (Stratford). A Kobelco supercharger is employed. Engine power is transferred through a custom 2-speed powerglide transmission, which was also built in-house.
Significant career accomplishments for Jim McCann include track Pro Comp championship titles at London Motorsports Park in both 1996 and 1997 as well as at the Grand Bend Motorplex also in 1997. Earlier in his career he was a national record holder in both NHRA (SS/IA) and IHRA (K/Altered). Jim McCann's biggest event win is widely considered to be his Can-Am Nationals Pro Comp championship which came at London in 1996.
The team is highly active at all local Ontario Quick 8 events as well as attending regional IHRA national event races as a Top Dragster. McCann's team will also participate within the Pro Top Outlaw circuit newly established in the USA.
For 2003 Jim McCann is proud to represent again his primary sponsor Gra-Ham Oil (a division of Gra-Ham Energy -- St. Marys, ON.) and their race fuel brand GoCo. Associate backing comes from Chevron Oil Products, Frank Kling Ltd. (Seaforth, ON) Woodcock Transportation Group (Sebringville), and Hishon Sports Excellence (Stratford).
