Bruce Oliver, who has been active on Western Canada's drag racing scene for over 35 years has a reputation for racing something very different! During 2001 -- he debuted Canada's first '55 Thunderbird-bodied Funny Car, a unique machine which saw action at various IBAA (7.50) events and local match races. That car and chassis, which was originally acquired from B.C.-based TAFC driver Thomas Baumeister, was raced for a couple of seasons before it was involved in a 180 mph guardwall confrontation at Saskatoon International Raceway, sustaining extensive damage. The chassis and car were however completely rebuilt and subsequently sold to Hinton, Alberta racer Tony Krupys.
In 2003 Bruce Oliver has changed racing menus and resurrecting what is arguably one of the most unique drag racing vehicles ever conceived -- a supercharged Volvo P-1800! The Volvo, which in fact first saw action in 1996, had been parked for the most part since 1998.
The 2600 lbs race car features an Alston chassis and is powered by a 395 CID Alcohol-burning Rodeck motor which produces an estimated 1600 HP. A 3-disc clutch and Lenco transmission are employed. The one of a kind machine has steel quarter panels and roof while the rest is Fiberglas. While not necessarily very aerodynamic, the car is an immense fan favourite. The Volvo P-1800 will see action in Western Canada's Top Comp circuit and is a likely entry for the IHRA Rocky Mountain nationals in Edmonton.
