Within NHRAs Western Canadian Super Stock racing circuit, Byron Setters has been an model drag racing student since coming on the scene in 1990. Setters has emerged as one of Western Canadas most competitive class racers.
Byron Setters runs his 3160 lbs 94 Camaro in GT/DA trim using a 350 CID motor. Frank Kirsher (Ponoco, AB) expertly built that engine which features stock iron heads and a single quadra-jet and is factory rated at 295 HP. The drivetrain also features a Powerglide Transmission by Art Congdon, a torque converter by Mike Monzinger and a Ford 9 rear end equipped with 6:00 gears.
After running a 78 Camaro in Super Pro and a 67 Camaro in SS/HA earlier in his career, Setters switched to a Gary Hansen-built 94 Camaro Super Stock during the 1995 season. That car was acquired from Phil Cocuzza and brought back to Red Deer where it was assembled at Beagle Automotive.
Setters is best know for his impressive NHRA Division Six points championship run during the 1994 season. That year he won his first career divisional event at Boise, Idaho and had two runner-up finishes (at Seattle & Las Vegas) to clinch the overall title. In 2001 Bryon Setters achieved his lifelong dream when he scored his illusive first NHRA national event win winning the SummitRacing.com National at Las Vegas in April. Setters's first national title included a final round win over evenutal 2001 Super Stock World Champion Dan Fletcher. Prior to that Setters has come close on a number of occasions.
Byron Setters finances his family orientated drag racing operation almost exclusively from his own business which he operates with his brother Wylson: Setters & Sons Construction Ltd., Red Deer, AB. That company does excavating and road building along with asphalt and oil field hauling. Associate help comes from Tomcat Machinery (Red Deer) and Beagle Automotive (Red Deer).
Byron Setters credits valuable help from Ralph Van Paagenham, Gary and Lynn Hansen, Art Congdon and Don Thomas for making his racing program a success.
