Gary Irving, who is co-owner of Superior Sprinkler (a fire sprinkler contract company) has been drag racing for over 20 years. He has been a mainstay within the Pro Modified class since 1992. In 1998, and while driving a supercharged 41 Willys, Irving was the Canadian Pro Modified Series champion and recorded the quickest Pro Mod run ever on Canadian soil, 6.354 secs at Cayuga International Dragway Park. With that car he set and reset numerous Canadian track records.
Beginning in 1999, Gary Irving debuted an extremely radical 1952 Chevy, constructed in part by Jim Salemi at G-Force Race Cars. That car, which featured swing bar suspension technology, was powered by a 526 CID Keith Black Chevrolet motor, was raced within both the Canadian Drag Racing Series and the U.S.-based Super Chevy circuit using both alcohol and nitromethane fuels.
In 2002 Gary Irving consummated a racing relationship with famous Canadian custom and race car fabricator Tom VanDerGeld (Cambridge, ON). Together the duo constructed and debuted a fantastic new '37 Chevy Pro Mod/Nitro Coupe. That revolutionary car features a 3/4 replica featuring chopped and channelled carbon fibber body and is equipped with both unique rear wheel fender skirts and an innovative rear wing configuration. Not only was the car very fast from the "get go", it was an enormous fan favorite.
Power for the '37 Coupe comes from a 526 CID Fontana Chevy engine which is equipped with Venolia pistons, a Crane cam, a Littlefield supercharger, Crower clutch and Lenco transmission. The rear end is a G-Force 9" Ford assembly outfitted with a Strange Engineering centre section. Irving and VanDerGeld do race the car at select IHRA events as a legal Pro Modified car however their primary focus remains the Super Chevy series within which they are considered one of the top running teams. In 2002 the Gary Irving Motorsports amassed an impressive winning record scoring circuit wins in Texas, Virginia and Florida, while enroute to a "top 5" points finish. In addition they earned Super Chevy series track performance records.
During the summer of 2002 while racing at Grand Bend Motorplex in Ontario the team recorded a stunning 6.148 secs at 230.35 mph -- the fastest run ever by a door car anywhere and at any time on Canadian soil.
