Montreal's J.P.L. Performance is home to the province of Quebec's quickest and fastest Street Cars. Team JPL started racing three years ago with Johnny Chiovitti as owner and driver of two cars -- a Super Street 1969 Camaro and a Pro Street 1969 Camaro.
The Super Street car is powered by a Scott Shafiroff-prepared 615 CID Big Chief aluminium Donovan engine. That motor is rated at 1200 HP without nitrous-oxide and 1700 HP with nitrous. A new Pro Street Camaro is still in a tuning and testing phase however the team objective is to have that car running in the low 7-seconds zone during the upcoming racing season.
Despite being a relative newcomer to the Street Car racing scene, Johnny Chiovitti surprised the North American circuit during the prestigious 2000 World Street Car Nationals at Orlando Speed World in Florida.
Not only did he qualify well in the feature Heavy Street class -- he came close to winning the event. The team broke a transmission outer shaft during a semi-final round win and that prevented them from making the final round. That near victory holds well for the team's chances this season. JPL Performance will be active at various Quebec and Ontario drag strips this summer and the also plan to return to Orlando's 2001 World Street Car Nationals next October.
JPL Performance is a performance centre and garage which builds race cars and restores old cars. It also has a fully equipped speed shop. Jean-Pierre Eloy is the owner of the garage and also a Pro Street car driver. Mechanic Yves Croteau built both race cars and is the team's master of high performance. Yves and his wife Monica also own and race a Super Street car.
