Mario Gourgue's Super Comp Chevy Camaro is a remarkable testament to home-built engineering. Gourgue built and assembled every aspect of his race car including the chassis (from a Chassis Works kit), the body, the complete engine and the transmission.
The quick-leaving and hard-running machine features a 525 CID big block Chevy engine with Bowtie heads which Mario machined and assembled at his own Gourgue Racing Engine shop. On the dyno that motor has produced 830 HP. Internal components include a Crower crank, Eagle rods, GE pistons and a Comp camshaft. A single 1050 Holley carburetor delivers a fuel/air mix through an Edelbrock intake manifold.
Gourgue's racing reputation in the province of Quebec and at Northeastern NHRA events is well known. His biggest career win came during the 1997 season when he won the Super Comp (8.90) title at the prestigious NHRA Pennsylvania Dutch Classic event at Maple Grove Raceway. In 1989 he won the NHRA National Open at Napierville Dragway driving a 1968 Camaro in Super Gas (9.90). Mario Gourgue also has a number of Super Pro wins at Sanair International Raceway to his credit. Gourgue has not yet won his first career NHRA national event race but he has come close on a number of occasions -- including two "final fours" (semifinals) at the Keystone Nationals.
Mario Gourgue is a self-employed engine builder by trade. He specializes in high-performance Chevrolet applications and his engines are utilized by a number of top rated Quebec-based drag and stock car racers.
