Mark Nielsen's 2000 Chevy Camaro is arguably one of Canada's most high-tech Pro Modified drag race cars. Featuring a chassis designed and built by IHRA Pro Modified standout, Al Billes, the chopped, narrowed and stretched supercharged 2600 lb machine hit the circuit in early 2000.
The Nielsen Motorsports Camaro features a 526 CID Alan Johnson Chevrolet engine built by the 2oo3 IHRA Funny Car Champions at Atchison Machine Service and produces an estimated 2400 HP. Nielsen's team employees a Kobelco Superman14-71 Hi-Helix supercharger, a Tom Anderson fuel system, and a JBR carbon fiber injector, all coupled to a Lenco 3 spd transmission and clutch.
Driver and team owner Mark Nielsen has been active on Eastern Canada's drag racing circuit for 18 years. He raced a '68 Camaro in Super Pro, and a '87 Corvette in Pro Comp and Outlaw Pro Stock. He first switched to blown doorslammers in 1998 when he purchased the supercharged Chevy Lumina, formally campaigned by Bruce Boland, which he dubbed "Quick Fix" and moved into IHRA Top Sportsman and regional Pro Modified action. After acquiring the Camaro, Nielsen advanced into IHRA National Event Pro Modified and Super Chevy Nitro Coupe competion.
Career racing highlights include a runner-up finish in Top Sportsman Quick 8 Shootout competition during the IHRA National Event at Maryland International Raceway in 1999 and qualifying for Pro Modified at numerous other National Events. Nielsen has a number of event wins in Outlaw Pro Stock to his credit. His first full pass in a supercharged car produced a stunning 6.62 secs at 213.00 mph -- at Cayuga in 1998.
Driving his N'aero Camaro in IHRA Pro Modified and Super Chevy Show Association events, Nielsen had a strong semi-final round finish during the IHRA Mopar Canadian Nationals shootout -- which was his IHRA national event debut driving the car.
The Nielsen Motorsports Camaro will be competing at select Outlaw Pro Mod races, IHRA National Events and Super Chevy Show Association Nitro Coupe events in the 2004 season. Nielsen Motorsports is a self funded racing operation.
