SATURDAY NIGHT SPECIAL RACING is recognized as one of Western Canada's most potent Sportsman racing operations. It is comprised of two Super Gas cars that are driven by father and son Ron and Jason Mercer.

Ron Mercer, who owns and operates Ron's RaceCars (Kelowna, BC) has been active on the Canadian drag racing scene since 1980. Formally a resident of Southern Ontario, Ron first stepped up to the Super Gas 9.90 category in 1986 after bracket racing for about five years at Cayuga Dragway Park. In 1986 he won the NHRA Division One points race at Cayuga and also placed first in Super Gas seven times while enroute to a second place finish in final Stedelbauer Super Gas Series championship points. In 1987 Ron won three Super Gas events while finishing third in both Super Gas and Super Pro championship points at Cayuga. After moving to B.C. in 1988 to develop his Race Car building business, Ron got back into the driver's seat in 1994 behind the wheel of his self-built '72 Datsun 240Z. Ron has enjoyed much success driving that car. His first year back he finishing 3rd in Super Pro points at Eagle Motorplex in Ashcroft BC. Since then Ron has claimed the Thunder Mountain Super Gas Championship and also won the prestigious AHRA World Finals title in Spokane, WA. Ron Mercer has top ten finishes to his credit in both NHRA Division Six Super Gas points and Canada West Super Gas points series. Ron Mercer continues to be active in Super Gas racing competing all over Western Canada and Western U.S. states at NHRA national and regional event levels.

Jason Mercer began his racing career in 1997 while just 16 years old. In his rookie season Jason finished third in Super Pro points at Thunder Mountain. In 1998 he won his first racer ever, scoring at the Canada West Super Gas Series event. He combined that win with a number of other late round finishes to place 6th in final points for the season. The year 2000 saw Jason try his luck in NHRA's new Top Comp class with a brand new 565 CID 1977 Vega outfitted with nitrous-oxide injection. Jason had one win and one runner-up in that car but his wild crowd pleasing smoky burnouts made him a fan favourite and earned him the nickname: "Young Gun" Mercer. Also in 2000, while racing the car in Super Gas trim, Jason Mercer competed at his first ever NHRA divisional and national event races. Jason will continue that trend in 2001and beyond.

Ron's Race Cars, the team's primary sponsor, has earned it's reputation for building premium race cars for many of Western Canada's top racers. Valuable associate sponsorship for Saturday Night Special Racing comes from Tru-Trim Graphics, Interstate Batteries and Pro West Converters.

Future team plans include a new Datsun 240Z, which driver Ron Mercer expects to debut for the 2002 season.
