Art Congdon is one of Western Canadas most competitive and longest running drag racers. After getting his racing start in 1970 behind the wheel of an Oldsmobile 442 in E/Stock, Congdon has remained active on the Western Canadian and NHRA Pacific Northwest Division scene ever since. Prior to running his present day Super Stock Oldsmobile, Congdon raced two Chevrolet Camaros. His first was a 427 CID model, which began life in B/S but evolved into SS/DA. Congdons most famous car was however his 69 Camaro ragtop which he raced for some 18 seasons between 1975 and 1994. In 1995 Art Congdon acquired his Oldsmobile Calais from fellow Canadian racer Abe Loewen (from Regina, SK). That F.J. Smith-built machine was converted to the GT class and features a 350 CID Chevrolet engine expertly built by Frank Kirchner (Ponoka, AB). That motor is NHRA rated at 295 HP. The Oldsmobile features a Powerglide transmission, which was self-built by Art Congdon. That is equipped with TCI hardware and a Munsinger converter. Other important racing components used by Art Congdon Racing include a Comp Camshaft, Hooker Headers, Strange struts and axles, Richmond gears, Phoenix Tires and a Val Hedworth Quadra-jet carburetor.
Art Congdons dedicated drag racing career has included many highlights. That includes representing NHRAs Pacific Northwest Division during the prestigious TRW Sportsman All-Stars competition at Columbus, OH. and a second place finish in final Northwest Division Six Super Stock points during the early 1990s. Congdon has claimed numerous Super Stock feature event wins in Western Canada and has NHRA Divisional points race wins to his credit from Ashcroft BC and Yakima, WA. His has been a multi-time top 5 finisher at the Divisional points level. In the spring of 2001, Congdon set both ends of the NHRA national record for his GT/CA class.
Congdons racing accomplishments have all come while remaining completely independent and unsponsored. He credits early influence from Ron Simard and the more recent support from fellow Alberta Super Stock racers
Byron Setters and Don Thomas as being key to his racing successes. Art Congdon also thanks his wife Laura,
his daughter Lorena, and son Danny for their ongoing support of his racing efforts.
