Jim Morrison is a veteran of Canadian drag racing and one of the Maritime Provinces' most famous racing names. In December of 2000, Morrison sold off his interests in Performance Auto World, which he owned and operated for over twenty years to become a professional touring Sportsman drag racer. During 2000 he added a new Ed Quay Super Comp dragster to his racing operation to compliment his reliable and consistent 70 Opel GT. Morrison continues to campaign both machines in Eastern IHRA and NHRA (8.90 and 9.90) class competition.
The dragster has 230-inch chassis, features a 4-link suspension, and is outfitted with a 540 CID engine. Morrisons Opel GT, which he has been running successfully since 1989, has a 509 CID engine built by fellow Canadian Maritime province racers Allyn and John Armstrong. For convenience sake and when not on tour, Morrison keeps both his racing machines based at Chuck Rothermels Kinderhook NY-based facility.
Morrisons drag racing career dates back to the year 1971 and age seventeen. He got his start at Maitland Dragway in Nova Scotia with a 56 Chevy and then a 67 Camaro. He also ran a Plymouth Barracuda in Super Stock for a time. His purchased his first Opel GT in 1984 and raced that until 1988 when he crashed it during an event on Prince Edward Island. Morrisons present day Opel GT has in fact been active since the 1989 season. In that car came Morrisons two biggest claims to fame: NHRA national event titles at Sanair in 1989 and at Maple Grove in 1998. Jim Morrison has multiple Top 10 finishes in NHRA Division One Super Gas points and has placed in the Top 50 in NHRA World Super Gas standings six times in his career.
An impressive list of associate sponsors back Jim Morrisons racing efforts. That includes Valvoline/Pyroil Oil, Hoosier Tires, A&J Automotive, Brandywine Cylinder Heads, TAG Weather Stations and Vintage Trailer Sales.
