The father and son team of Joe and Tom Bene debuted their flashy Pontiac Firebird after completing construction in March of 2001. A 565 CID Chevrolet engine equipped with single stage nitrous-oxide is mounted within the frame rails of the L&J chassied car. That engine which is an in-house product of Bene Motorsports, is rated at 1200 HP and features Brodix cylinder heads and a single 1050 cfm Holley carburetor. Power is delivered through a Bill Taylor built 2-speed Powerglide transmission equipped with a Coan converter to a custom sheet metal Ford 9 rear end housing. Most of the race team fabrication and machine work was done by Toms Uncle, Frank Bene at his Excel Motorsports facility (Stoney Creek, ON). The Firebird features a stunning paint scheme applied by Canadian Jet Car driver Dan Pirisi (D&J Restoration).
Driver Tom Bene first emerged on Canadas drag racing scene in the mid 1990s. He enjoyed great success driving his teams 1992 Camaro that was raced for four years. In 1999, driving the Camaro, Bene was the overall Pro Comp points season champion in the Canadian Drag Racing Series. While competing in Top Sportsman and Pro Comp he won multiple events in Ontario while driving that car. Bene Motorsports first entered IHRAs national event circuit in 2001 attending three races -- at Grand Bend Motorplex, New York Raceway and Norwalk Raceway Park. Their best finish that year was a third round placing during the IHRA Carquest Empire Nationals.
Beginning in 2002 Bene Motorsports will undertake a more focused IHRA circuit effort. An extensive season tour including both IHRA national and divisional races and a World Championship chase is planned.
