Howes Racing debuted their two-car Super Stock racing operation for the 2002
season. The all Mopar team is comprised of Maritimes drag racing icon
Wendell Howes and his son Mark. Wendell Howes raced a crowd-pleasing SS/AA '
68 Barracuda extensively from 1988 to 1997 before taking a four-year hiatus
from the sport due to demands of his expanding business. Prior to his short
retirement, Wendell Howes had numerous strong event performances to his
credit including various SS/AA class wins and sub national record
performances. Wendell's best career finish in competition came at the IHRA
event in Epping, New Hampshire where he placed runner-up.
The year 2002 marked the return to action for Wendell driving his familiar
but now refurbished and updated '68 Hemi Barracuda. Wendell's son Mark
joined the racing team equation behind the wheel of a '64 Plymouth
Belvedere. Mark's car, which is in fact an original factory car, is equipped
with lightweight aluminium hood, bumper and front fenders. Also Hemi
powered, it runs as a SS/BA. Both cars were painted to match by Gerard
McGinnis using spectacular Mopar factory colours: "prowler purple" and
"prowler yellow".
Both racecars feature chassis and roll cage work by Allyn and John Armstrong
(AJ Automotive -- Kingston NS). The majority of the machine work and
fabrication on the Belvedere is the expertise of crewmember Bill Kelly, who
also helped to refurbish the Barracuda. Both racecars use Pro Trans 904
3-speed automatic transmissions and Phoenix tires mounted on Weld wheels. On
raceday the '68 Barracuda weighs in a 3170 lbs and the '64 Belvedere scales
as 3425 lbs.
The family oriented Howes Racing team takes a casual but serious approach to
it's drag racing schedule while participating at regional NHRA and IHRA
national and divisional events.
Wendell Howes owns and operates Master Promotions which is Canada's largest
independent trade show promoting company. First established in 1976, Master
Promotions hosts 25-30 trade and consumers shows each year across Canada.
Mark Howes is employed at Global Convention Services Ltd., an Atlantic
Canada subsidiary of Master Promotions.
