One of the province of Ontario's more impressive independent fast doorslammer circuit runners is Diego Gubert. Gubert, from Brampton, stays close to home running Southern Ontario drag strips at Grand Bend, St. Thomas and Cayuga (now Toronto Motorsports Park). His 1991 Pontiac Firebird is in fact the former Paone Brothers Pro Stock car. Gubert acquired that Jerry Bickel-built machine in 1995 and has been campaigning it ever since. A 632 CID Pontiac motor equipped with Big Chief cylinder heads powers the car. That engine, which was meticulously assembled by Serge Tourikinan and Ned Erkman at Rolling Thunderz Racing Engines (Concord, ON), produces an estimated 1600 HP with a single-stage nitrous oxide system. Drive train components include a Lenco 4-speed transmission, a triple-disc Crower clutch and a Ford 9 inch rear end assembly outfitted with 4:30 gears.
Gubert traces his drag racing roots back to his teenage years when the Entec Racing Chevelles raced by Billy Gilmore and Gino Reale heavily influenced him. His first race car was a '68 Chevy Nova SS which he ran in ET brackets from 1976-79. After that he drove an Oldsmobile Frienza Outlaw Pro Stock/Pro Mod car which went as quick as 7.62 secs and 185 mph. For a couple of seasons (1993-94) Diego was racing partner to Tony Pontieri on a nitrous-injected Pro Modified Camaro project.
Despite being a 100% independent, Gubert has amassed some impressive credentials and has been a regular qualifier at numerous Ontario Pro Modified programs. His best finish in competition came in 2001 when he placed runner-up to Carl Spiering in a Pro Modified feature race at Grand Bend Motorplex. The 2001 season also saw Gubert attain a personal milestone when he ran his first career "six" -- which also came at Grand Bend.
In 2002, Diego Gubert Motorsports diversified. Not only did the car continue to compete in local Pro Modified programs, Gubert also add mufflers to his equation for Outlaw Street competition in OSCA. Gubert's machine also underwent a number of chassis and safety enhancements at Tom VanDerGeld's Lowdown Hot Rods facility. Those were made in anticipation of expected 200+ mph speeds -- which was a team objective.
