Bill Denney is a long time and familiar racer on the Southern Ontario drag racing scene. Denney who is also well known for his expert custom painting skills, has been involved in Canada’s drag racing since 1962. His first exposure to the sport came as a track worker at St. Thomas Dragway and his racing career evolved from there. Over the years he ran a variety of racecars including a C/Altered Model “A”, a 1949 Anglia “Gasser” and a pair of 27T Roadsters. From 1992 to 2002 Denney raced a nitrous-injected Pontiac Firebird in local Top Sportsman and Outlaw Pro Modified programs.
During the 2003-racing season Bill debuted his newest venture -- a spectacular Jerry Bickel-built 1938 Chevy Pro Mod. The car, which was acquired from Michigan-based racer, Jerry McCormick is in fact the same machine that was campaigned very successfully by Iowa’s Carl Moyer on the IHRA tour. The car is powered by a home-assembled 706 CID aluminium Donovan engine. Important driveline components include a Steve Vick clutch assembly, a Lenco 4-speed transmission and a Mark Williams floater rear end.
Driving for Bill Denney is his son-in-law Paul Mathers who crossed over to drag racing after a successful career racing in the CASCAR Super Series. Mathers had a number of feature race wins and track championships to his credit while Stock car racing.
Bill Denney has applied one of his signature custom paint jobs to the new car. During his career he has amassed numerous “Best Appearing” car awards at both drag racing events as well as the car show circuit. Denney’s reputed business (Bill Denney Body & Paint) was first established in 1982.
Sponsorship for the team comes from a number of associates including Can-Usa (Dorchester, ON), Carquest Auto Parts and his home track, St. Thomas Dragway.
