Few drag racing fans in Western Canada will dispute that John Genovese’s Top Sportsman Dodge Daytona is not one of the nicest looking machines in the entire province of Alberta.
Featuring a chassis built by Rick Jones, the ex-Pro Stock car was originally campaigned using a 572 CID motor built by Allyn Lee (Red Deer, AB). In 2005, the team installed and began experimentation with an all new 655 CID engine equipped with Indy cylinder heads. Important drivetrain components include a JW 2-speed powerglide transmission (by Commercial Powertrain), a driveshaft by Drive Systems Inc. (Calgary) and a Ford 9” rear end assembly outfitted with a Strange centre section and 4:10 gears. Ron’s Fuel Injection built the fuel system which is alcohol. The converter is a TCS and giant 16.5 x 33 x15 slicks by Mickey Thompson are utilized for traction.
Barbwire Racing calls Medicine Hat Motorplex it’s home track. During the 2003 racing season there, while campaigned the Daytona in Super Pro trim, driver John Genovese was the overall track champion at that facility. Other career highlights so far include a huge win at the 2004 “Mopars at the Strip” event held in Las Vegas and a semi-final round finish at the NHRA Division Finals in Mission BC, the same season.
Primary sponsorship for Barbwire racing is from Prowler Tubing Services (a family-based coil tubing business) based from Brooks Alberta. Valuable associate sponsors include Magic’s Auto Parts, Brooks Industrial Metals, Brooks Lube and Alignment, Pennzoil, Circle D Transport, Liberty Trucking, Rolling Air Pressure Service, and Dinosaur Country Store.
Barbwire racing acknowledges with great appreciation it’s immediate family, friends and crewmembers who’s support have been instrumental in the team’s ongoing advancement.
